TWAS announces new South-South fellowships programmes

TWAS announces new South-South Fellowships Programmes

TWAS – the academy of sciences for the developing world – has entered into agreements with the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata, India, the National Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology (CEMB), Lahore, Pakistan, and the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS, which includes the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry and the Dr. Panjwani Centre for Molecular and Drug Research), Karachi, Pakistan, to offer a number of postgraduate and postdoctoral fellowships to young scientists from developing countries.

These three new programmes complement TWAS's current South-South fellowship programme, which already provides for fellowships to be undertaken in institutions in India, Brazil and China.

Among these, the most long-running programme is that between TWAS and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India, which has recently been updated.

Other TWAS fellowships offered in India are provided by the Department of Biotechnology of the Indian Ministry of Science and Technology (DBT) and the S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences.

In addition, under a similar agreement with TWAS, more than 80 institutions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) offer fellowships. TWAS also partners the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) to provide fellowships in Brazil.

Together, these various schemes make TWAS's South-South fellowship programme the largest in the world.
