Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission
Ph.D. in Engineering:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Engineering Disciplines, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in the relevant branch of Engineering with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
2. B. Tech. degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Ph.D. in Sciences:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Science Disciplines, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in a Science subject with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
2. Masters degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
3. B.Tech. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Ph.D. in Economics and Philosophy:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Economics and Philosophy, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in Arts/ Commerce with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent. Masters degree in Science/Engineering/Agriculture/Environment Sciences/ International Business with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks may be considered for research areas consistent with the academic background and special interests.
2. B.Tech. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

# As per MHRD Directives, candidate selected under TA/RA category cannot accept or hold any appointment paid or otherwise or receive any emoluments, salary, stipend from any source during the tenure of TA/RA ship. Hence, candidates selected for TA/RA and having employment with or without pay with any organization/institution/establishment/project etc. must leave the job and submit relieving certificate before joining the Ph.D. programme under TA/RA category.
* Sponsored candidates have to submit letter of sponsorship based on Appendix I/ II/ III/ IV respectively of the application guidelines.
For Institute Fellowship i.e. TA, RA; (except candidates holding M.Tech / M.E. degree) all should have qualified GATE or CSIR-JRF or CSIR -NET or UGC-JRF or UGC-NET.
Candidates not having a valid GATE score or not having CSIR/UGC/NBHM/DBT award can be considered for admission to the PhD programme if they have minimum of 2 years of professional work experience. However, they will not be considered for Teaching/Research Assistantship.
Selection
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and/or interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Reservations:
The reservation of seats in admissions for SC, ST, OBC categories and for persons with disability (PD) will be as per Government of India rules. OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates:
Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ ST applicants.
Financial Support:
The Institute assistantships will be available to eligible (Indian) students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI) norms, as applicable from time to time.
The students are encouraged and expected to complete the programme in about four years time. The period of validity of Ph.D. registration for all candidates is six years from the date of confirmation of registration (which commences after successful completion of course credit requirements). However, the extension of fellowship for the entire duration of Ph.D. is not automatic and is subject to institute rules.
As part of the training, Ph.D. students are expected to assist in running the undergraduate labs and in other teaching and research assignments.

Eligibility :
1. The minimum qualification for the PGDM is Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (in 10+2+3 pattern) from any University in India or overseas recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Minimum Marks : 50%. Candidates appearing / appeared for the qualifying degree will also be considered for admission provisionally subject to their production of degree/ certificate by November. Preference will be given to BBA, BCA, B.Com., BA (Eco.) and Engineering Students.
2. MAT Score- 450.
3. CAT Score- 40% and above.
Selection Procedure : for Management Programs, Personality Test, Written Test, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview. Eligibility criteria for M.Phil/Ph.D
a) A candidate will be eligible for admission and registration for the Ph.D programme provided he/she qualified:
i) for the award of the Master's Degree of any recognized University/ Higher Learning Institution in the relevant discipline or any other qualification recognised as equivalent thereto in such fields of study as notified for the purpose from time to time by the University; and
ii) in an entrance examination conducted by the University at the national level on the pattern of UGC/CSIR.
OR
b) Talented graduates in a discipline, through laid down procedures will be eligible for admission into a full-time Integrated Doctoral Programme offered in collaboration with institutions of repute.
However, candidates holding an M.Phil. Degree or those candidates who have cleared JEST of DAE, or UGC-NET, or GATE of IIT, or those having five years of relevant teaching/ practical/industry/professional experience will be exempted from appearing at the Entrance Examination.
Provided further that candidates who are employees of the University shall have completed at least two years of service in the University on the date they submit the application for admission.
Note: Some of the disciplines under Schools of Studies/Institutes/Centers have recommended specific eligibility criteria for specific disciplines /areas keeping in view specialization that are required for a particular discipline/ area. General criteria for admission into Ph.D shall be considered subject to no specific eligibility criteria (if any) prescribed by the discipline of the School/ Centre/Institute.
Applications received for Ph.D programmes shall be classified into two categories:
Category A: Candidates having M.Phil or 5 years' relevant teaching/professional experience, who can directly undertake thesis work for Ph.D.
Category B: Candidates who have to undergo basic Course Work before or alongside undertaking thesis work.

• Prospective candidates can download the soft copy of the Prospectus and submit filled-in application form and format for Additional Information along with all relevant documents/certificates with a Demand Draft of Rs 750/- (In favour of “IGNOU” payable at “New Delhi”) to the Director, Research Unit, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068 .
• Read carefully advertisement as well as general guidelines on Research Degree Programmes and specific guidelines on particular Ph.D disciplines given in the Prospectus before you submit filled-in application form. Please do not submit any filled-in application form in case the discipline has not been advertised for January, 2011 cycle.
• Ph.D disciplines such as Political Science, Education, Distance Education, Disability Studies and Management are being added into the revised Ph.D Prospectus January, 2011. The revised prospectus will be uploaded into the website during 1st week of the August, 2010.
• M.Phil/Ph.D Programmes in Economics will not be on offer for January, 2011cycle. Details available in the prospectus on these disciplines are only for information. Do not submit any application for this discipline.
• Filled-in applications received upto 11th October, 2010 shall be considered for January, 2011 cycle. No application shall be entertained after 11th October, 2010 as the University has scheduled Entrance Test for Category ‘B’ on the 2nd Sunday 14th November, 2010.

Eligibility : A Pass in B.L/L.L.B degree from a recognized University. Candidates who have already appeared for the M.L. degree examination and passed in any paper or papers under the previous regulations are also eligible for the award of M.L. degree provided
(i) They pass in the remaining papers as per the present regulations,

(iii) Dissertation,

Eligibility for award of Degree : A candidate should complete the degree with in five years from the academic year in which he/she registers for the course. The candidate should each year attend the compulsory ten days Personal Contact Programme classes. Only then he/she will be eligible to appear for the I & II year examinations respectively.

ISSUE OF APPLICATION BY POST : Those who want to obtain application by Post have to send a written requisition specifying the name of the programme together with a Demand Draft for a sum of Rs.250/- (Rs. 200/- towards cost of Application and Rs.50/- towards postage) drawn in favour of “The Registrar, University of Madras, Chennai -5.”

Eligiblity:
• Teachers presently working in Government recognised schools within Tamil Nadu with atleast two years of experience are eligible for admission to the programme.
• Candidates should have successfully undergone the 10 + 2 + 3 or 11+1+3 pattern of examinations in a recognized University: However, candidates not qualified in XII examination or PUC but possessing Two years Bachelor Preparatory Programme Certificate / Two years Foundation Course Certificate / mTwo years Diploma Course conducted by State Government / recognised Universities and qualified with three years U.G. Degree course are also considered eligible for admission.
• In case of Economics, Commerce and Home Science, the candidates should have studied the same subjects both at UG and PG levels.
Admission Procedure:
Admission will be based on the performance of the candidates in the Entrance Examination to be
conducted by the University and the Communal Reservation quota of Tamil Nadu Government. If there is a tie in the Entrance Exam marks, the order of priority will be given to Teaching Experience and Marks secured in the basic subject to break the tie.

ELIGIBILITY
a) A candidate (Indian / foreigner) who has qualified for the award of the Master's Degree of this Institute or of any other University recognised by the University Grants Commission with not less than 50% marks or an equivalent grade; and

FULL-TIME Ph.D. CANDIDATES
All eligible candidates who pursue full-time research for Ph.D. in this Institute. A person working in GRI in a project sponsored by the UGC / CSIR / ICSSR / ICAR / DOE / DST and other funding agencies with a duration of not less than two years shall also be eligible to register for Ph.D. under this category, provided his / her Principal Investigator certifies that he/she fulfils the criteria mentioned above.
PART-TIME TEACHER CANDIDATES (INTERNAL & EXTERNAL)
Part-time internal teacher candidates:
The eligible candidates are those working as temporary lecturers in various departments of this Institute with two years of service at the time of applying for the Ph.D programme.
Part-time external teacher candidates:
The eligible candidates are those working as teachers in any educational / research Institutions with two years of service at the time of applying for the Ph.D programme.
PART-TIME NON-TEACHER CANDIDATES (INTERNAL & EXTERNAL)
Part-time internal non-teacher candidates:
The eligible candidates are the permanent non-teaching staff of GRI with three years of service at the time of applying for the Ph.D. programme.
PART-TIME EXTERNAL NON-TEACHER CANDIDATES:
The eligible candidates are those working as staff in departments of state / central government, public / private /NGO sector with three years of service at the time of applying for the Ph.D programme.
Retired persons can also register themselves under this category, provided they satisfy the eligibility requirements.
RESIDENTIAL REQUIREMENT (Part-time)
Part-time teacher and non–teacher external scholars are required to reside on campus for a minimum of 180 days during their period of research.
The Research Supervisor concerned will decide what constitutes “residence” and where the residential requirement is to be fulfilled, considering the nature of the study and its requirements. The Research Supervisor shall send a certificate to the Controller of Examinations to the effect that the candidate has completed 180 days of campus residential requirement when submitting the synopsis.
ADMISSION OF FOREIGN STUDENTS
Foreign applicants will be considered at any time if recommended by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The foreign nationals must produce a valid research visa at the time of seeking admission to the Ph.D. programme. If admitted, they will be governed by such rules and regulations as may be framed by the Government of India and by the authorities of the Institute from time to time.
ENTRANCE TEST
An Entrance Test will be conducted by the Controller of Examinations. The question paper will be prepared totally for 2 hours: One hour for Research Aptitude Test (General) and one hour for the Subject Test. A minimum of 60% in each component is a must to become eligible for provisional admission. Question papers for Research Aptitude Test (General) and Subject Test will be set and evaluated by a Board consisting of the HOD and all the Research Supervisors. The process will be coordinated by the Controller of Examinations.

32nd Postgraduate Programme in Rural Management (PRM 2011-13)

Postgraduate Programme in Rural Management (PGPRM) - Details
PRM is a two-year fully residential postgraduate programme comprising four different segments - classroom, fieldwork, organisational understanding and management training. PRM is recognized as equivalent to Master's Degree by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is also approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Eligibility: Graduates in any discipline with a minimum of 15 years (10+2+3) of education and having 50% (45% for SC/ ST/ PwD*) aggregate marks or an equivalent GPA from a recognised Indian or foreign university/ institution are eligible to apply.
Candidates, who expect to fulfill the eligibility requirements before, June 06,2011 may also apply. Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply.
Fees: The total programme cost over the period of two years (inclusive of tuition fee and service charges) is estimated to be about Rs. 4 lakh. Costs for students are kept low through cross subsidisation.

FPRM is a coursework based doctoral programme with a residency requirement of minimum 3 years, approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
Thematic Fields of Specialisation:
(a) Management of Collectives; (b) Agribusiness/Rural Marketing; (c) Natural Resources Management; (d) Development Management; (e) Micro-finance Management; (f) Governance and Livelihoods; (g) Rural Infrastructure and Services Management; and (h) Public Policy and Non-profit Management.
Eligibility: Candidates with any one of the following:
(i) Postgraduation in any discipline from a recognised Institution with 55% marks, and 50% marks at graduation level;
(ii) PRM from IRMA;
(iii) Four-year professional degree (engineering, agricultural sciences etc.) with 60% marks and at least one year work experience;
(iv) Five-year professional degree (medicine, veterinary science, architecture etc.) with 60% marks are eligible for admission to FPRM. SC/ST/OBC/PwD* candidates are eligible for 5% relaxation in the marks specified above.
Candidates, who expect to fulfill the eligibility requirements before June 06,2011, may also apply.
Fellowship: Every FPRM participant receives a fellowship of Rs. 14,000/- per month till they clear the Comprehensive Qualifying Examination and then Rs. 16,000/- per month and a contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year for a period of 4 years.
Placement: Graduating fellows have joined faculty positions in IIMs, and other reputed institutions/universities.
Selection Procedure: A written test, common for all the above programmes will be conducted on November 14,2010 - Sunday (09:15-12:15 hr) at 27 centres across India. PRM participants are selected on the basis of the written test, group discussion and interview. FPRM participants are selected on the basis of the written test, interview and presentation of an essay.
