CMI is a centre of excellence for research and teaching in the mathematical sciences. CMI conducts B.Sc. (Hons.) programmes in Mathematics & Computer Science (integrated) and Physics, and M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Mathematics and in Computer Science.

All courses at CMI are taught by active researchers who draw on their professional expertise to offer new insights into the subject material.

CMI graduates have been admitted with full financial aid at the best academic institutions in India and abroad. The Chennai Mathematical Institute
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI), a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, is recognized both within the country and abroad as one of the important centres in India for research and teaching in mathematical sciences. CMI is set up under a Trust and is managed by a Governing Council made up of eminent personalities from both academic and non-academic backgrounds. The academic matters of the Institute are guided by its Research Advisory Committee consisting of highly respected scientists. The teaching programmes are overseen by the Academic Council, consisting of senior faculty from CMI and other leading institutions across India. The members of the Governing Council, Research Advisory Committee and Academic Council are listed on the front and back inside covers.

Research at CMI
Professor C. S. Seshadri, f.r.s., an internationally renowned mathematician, has headed the Institute since its inception. The Institute has a talented group of faculty members who have strong academic ties with reputed institutions in India and abroad. The Institute also attracts a regular stream of academic visitors, both from India and abroad. The main areas of research in Mathematics pursued at the Institute are algebra, analysis, differential equations, geometry and topology. In Computer Science, the main areas of research are formal methods in the specification and verification of software systems, design and analysis of algorithms, computational complexity theory and computer security. In Physics, research is being carried out mainly in quantum field theory, string theory and mathematical physics. The Institute has a well established Ph.D. Programme in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Placement
Students from CMI have gone on to pursue further studies at the best academic institutions in India and abroad. These include Caltech, Chicago, MIT, Princeton, U Penn and Yale in USA, ENS Paris, Univ Paris-Sud and Univ Bordeaux in France, the Max Planck Institutes and Humboldt University in Germany and the Harish-Chandra Research Institute, IITs, IMSc and ISI in India.
Though the majority of students from the Institute continue in Mathematics, Computer Science and Physics, CMI graduates have also moved into areas such as financial mathematics (at IFMR), management (at IIM) and economics (both in India and abroad). Students from CMI have also been placed in some of the best software companies in India.

Campus and Hostel Facility
The Institute’s campus is located in the SIPCOT Information Technology Park in Siruseri, on the outskirts of Chennai. CMI’s programme is fully residential. All students are accommodated in the hostel on campus. The Institute has a regular transportation arrangement for students to visit the city for shopping and other activities.

B.Sc. (Honours) Programmes (Mathematics and Computer Science, Physics)
Admission and eligibility Students who have already passed, or expect to pass in 2008, the 12th standard (or equivalent) examination from a recognized board are eligible for admission to the programme. Admission is through an entrance examination to be conducted at centres throughout the country on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Students with exceptionally good performance in National Science Olympiads may be exempted from writing the entrance examination at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. Fees and scholarships
There will be a fee of Rs.750/- per semester (two semesters in a year). A limited number of scholarships will be available. A full scholarship will consist of the waiver of tuition fees and a monthly allowance of Rs. 3000. A half-scholarship will consist of the tuition fee being waived. The eligibility of a student to receive a scholarship will be reviewed every semester and will depend on satisfactory academic performance. Students of B.Sc. (Honours) Mathematics and Computer Science will receive an additional monthly scholarship of Rs. 2000, made possible through a generous private donation.

M.Sc. Programme in Mathematics
Admission and eligibility Students who have obtained, or expect to obtain in 2008, degrees such as B.Sc., B.Math., B.Stat. or B.Tech. are eligible to apply for the programme. Admission is through an entrance examination to be conducted at centres throughout the country on Thursday, May 29, 2008. Details about the admission procedure are available at the CMI website, http://www.cmi.ac.in. Fees and scholarships The total tuition fees for the M.Sc. programme in Mathematics will be Rs. 4800. A limited number of scholarships will be available. A full scholarship will consist of a waiver of tuition fees and a monthly allowance of Rs. 5000. M.Tech programme is offered in the Department of Aerospace Engg., Applied Mechanics, chemical Engg., Civil Engg., Computer Science and Engg., Electrical Engg., Mathematics (Industrial Mathematics and Scientific Computing), Mechanical Engg., Metallurgical and Materials Engg., Ocean Engg., and Physics (solid State Technology). In addition, a M.Tech in Clinical Engineering is also offered – details are given later in this advertisement.

QUALIFICATION:
(a) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture or equivalent, or Master’s degree in Mathematics/ Physics/ Life Sciences or related subjects or Professional qualification like AIME and other Associate membership as specified in the M.Tech Admission Brochure and

(b) Valid GATE score
Candidates graduating / graduated with B.Tech degree from IIT’s with CGPA of 8.0 and above in the case of General Category and 7.5 and above in the case of SC/ST Category can apply without GATE score. Seats are reserved for SC/ST Persons with Disabilities as per GOI rules.

Assistantship:
Candidates admitted to M.Tech progrmme are offered Half-time Teaching Assistantship (HTTA) of Rs.8000/- p.m. Admission to a few additional candidates who are under merit list may also be offered without HTTA. They may get HTTA after 6 months depending upon vacancy. A limited number of selected candidates will get opportunity to do M.Tech project in Germany under DAAD fellowship scheme.

Under Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) Graduate Fellowship scheme, two candidates will be selected either in Mechanical Engineering or in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering discipline and they will be offered a monthly stipend of Rs.11,000/- p.m. for two years with a one time educational materials allowance of Rs.5000/- More details about AERB scheme may be seen in the website: www.aerb.gov.in

M.Tech. in Clinical Engineering is a joint programme offered by IIT Madras, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences and Technology, Trivandrum, and Christian Medical College, Vellore. The Selection will be done on an All-India basis, through a screening test and a personal interview of eligible candidates. The M.Tech. programme is of two-and-a-half years duration. The students will study and be trained at all the three participating Institutes.

Notice for Admission to Ph.D./M.Tech./M.Des./M.Sc. (2 Years)/M.Sc. - Ph.d. (Dual Degree) Programme.


Applications are invited from Indian citizens for admission for the session commencing from July 2008 in the following programmes:

M.TECH. & Ph.D (ENGINEERING):
Aerospace, Biological Sciences & Bio Engg. Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Engg., Electrical, Industrial and Management Engg.(all areas of Management), Materials & Metallurgical, Materials Science Prog., Mechanical, Nuclear Engg. and Technology Prog. (only in Ph.D)

Ph.D. (SCIENCES): Chemistry, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics

Ph.D. (HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES): English (Literature and Linguistics), Psychology, Sociology.

M.TECH: Environmental Engineering & Management *Laser Technology.

M.DES.: Design

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D.: (Engineering) M.Tech./M.E./M.Sc. (Engg.) degree in the respective or allied area. The candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or Master's degree in Sciences in an allied area with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid GATE score may also apply. For Ph.D. in BSBE, candidates with MBBS, B.Pharma or M.Pharma Degree may also apply. Candidates with Master's Degree in Management may apply for Ph.D in Industrial and Management Engineering (IME). Ph.D.: (Sciences & HSS) M.Sc./M.A. degree in respective or allied area with a valid GATE/UGC/CSIR score.

M.TECH.: B.Tech/B.E./B.Sc.(Engg.)/M.Sc.in respective or allied area with a valid GATE/UGC/CSIR score; B.Tech. graduates from IITs with an overall minimum CGPA of 6.5 and a CGPA of 8.0 during the last two semesters in B.Tech. may also apply without a GATE score (Such candidates will, however, be not entitled for Institute Assistantship if CGPA is below 8.0). For M.Tech in Biological Sciences and Bio Engineering, candidates with MBBS or B.Pharma Degree area also considered.

M.DES.: A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Design or Architecture with a valid GATE/CEED score.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Financial aid (Assistantship/Scholarship) is provided for M.Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc.-Ph.D.(Dual Degree) Programmes. Tuition fee waiver of 50% is provided for M.Sc. (2 years)/M.Sc-Ph.D. (Dual Degree) students after first Semester. Sponsored and part-time candidates are also considered for M.Tech., M.Des. and Ph.D. Programmes. Sponsored candidates do not require GATE qualification. Several attractive Fellowships from Industries/DAE are also available. Guidelines for sponsored and part-time candidates are available in the Information Brochure.

RESERVATION: Reservations will be 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST for the year 2008-2009. Also up to 3% reservation shall apply as per Government of India rules for persons with disability (PD).

Last date for postal requests for application forms and Information Brochure is April 10, 2008. Forms can be obtained personally from the Academic Section up to April 16, 2008. Applications are invited from the teacher candidates for admission to the following programmes beginning in the summer of 2008.

Cost of application forms:

2. M.Phil (SSP) - Physical Education (Rs.400/-)

Application along with prospectus can be had from the undersigned (by designation) on payment of prescribed fees in person or though a Demand Draft drawn in favour of the Registrar, Annamalai University payable at Indian Bank or ICICI Bank, Annamalainagar or State Bank of India, Chidambaram with a self-addressed Kraft envelope of size 30cm x 13 cm and stamped to the value of Rs.5/- along with a requisition specifically stating the course for which application is required.

ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
EDUCATION
Teachers who are working at any levels in schools recognized by the Tamil Nadu Government or affiliated to the Central Board or Secondary Education or in the SCERT, DIET or other approved Research Institutions with a Master's Degree in Education of the Annamalai University or by any other Universities recognized as equivalent with a minimum of three years experience with M.Ed. Degree (with a minimum of 55%) or persons working as inspecting Officers in the Education Department of the Tamil Nadu Government are also eligible for admission to the programme.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Teachers who are working Higher Secondary Schools as Grade-I Physical Director or Physical Director in College/ University, Lectures, Assistant Physical Training Instructors/ Assistant Sports Officers/ Sports Officer in a University with a minimum of 3 years experience. They should have secured 55% of marks in the Master's degree in Physical Education.
