Admission 2010

CDS invites applications for admission to its full - time residential program, leading to PhD in Economics of the Jawaharlal Nehru University or the University of Kerala.

The Program has a strong orientation towards Development Studies with a core economics component and encourages cross - disciplinary inputs. Core areas of research at CDS and the current themes of PhD studies are listed elsewhere.



Master's with ≥ 55% marks and MPhil with FGPA of at least 6.0 (high second class) in Economics or related disciplines in Development Studies.

Those awaiting award of the MPhil Degree can also apply.
SC, ST & PH candidates eligible irrespective of percentage of marks.
Those who do not have an MPhil may be considered in exceptional cases of merit, if having at least two years research experience in a University / Research Institution and research publications in refereed academic journals.
Foreign nationals and those who have undergone the qualifying Programs abroad will be eligible subject to clarification on equivalence of their Degrees by the University.
Financial Assistance:

All the selected candidates will be offered Fellowships, available under various schemes.

ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowships Six:

Presently @ Rs. 6,000 per month for those who have cleared NET for lectureship and @ Rs. 5,000 for those who have not cleared the NET. The Fellowships carry an annual contingency Grant of Rs. 12,000 and have a tenure 3 Years.

ICSSR is considering revision of the tenure and emoluments; pending such revision, CDS has augmented this scheme to provide stipend @ Rs. 6,000 for all and an additional fourth year.

Further, ICSSR has earmarked one fellowship for University / College Teachers which will have a tenure of two years and with salary protection.

CDS Endowment Fellowships:

Two fellowships under the National Research Program on Plantation Development, funded by the Government of India Ministry of Commerce, are available to selected scholars who plan to work on aspects of Plantation Development.

These Fellowships have a maximum tenure of four years; emoluments are presently at ICSSR rates, but are likely to be revised.

Selected scholars can avail of the UGC's JRF and the RGNF for SC / ST candidates, if awarded such fellowships by the UGC. The schemes provide fellowship @ Rs. 12,000 for the first two years and @ Rs. 14,000 for the final three years.

Selected scholars from SC / ST communities of Kerala can seek assistance under the Government of Kerala Fellowship Scheme which is of UGC Fellowship tenure and 75% of UGC rates.

Selection Process:

The selection process has two phases:

First, candidates will be short - listed for Interview on the basis of their scores for Academic Record and Study Proposal.

1. Evaluation of the Research Proposal by a faculty panel.

2. Score for the Academic Record on a weighted scheme:

(2 x % of marks for the +2 course) + (3 x % marks for Bachelor's) + (5 x % of Marks for Master's) + (5 x % of marks for MPhil). Coursework grades will be reckoned for those awaiting award of MPhil Degree.

Final selection will be based on a personal Interview by the Admission Committee, comprising of CDS faculty as well as an ICSSR nominee.

The Committee shall base its recommendations on an assessment of the viability of the proposed study, whether it can be undertaken at CDS and the candidate's aptitude and capability to undertake the study.

The Personal Interviews are scheduled at CDS on 07 January 2010.

JEST is

Qualifying in JEST does not entitle an applicant to get a Research Fellowship. Eligibility
The candidates for the programme must have one of the following qualifications obtained from any of the universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, or an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE.

A Masters’ degree or its equivalent in any discipline with minimum 55% aggregate marks

OR

A Bachelors Degree in Engineering with 60% marks or equivalent grade point average

OR

Any professional qualifications such as CA, ICWA and CS with a minimum 55% aggregate marks.

In addition, all the candidates must have secured a minimum of 55 % marks in all their public examinations starting with the secondary level. Work experience in industry or academics, though not mandatory, will be given due credit in the selection process

Those who are appearing for their final year examination in the current academic year may also apply. However, their admission to the programme will be provisional subject to their successful completion of all requirements for obtaining the relevant degree before 30 June 2010.

Age Limit
Candidates must not be more than 45 years of age as on 30th June 2010..


Selection Process
Candidates who fulfill the eligibility criteria stated above are required to take Common Admission Test (CAT) held by the IIMs. Alternatively, those who have qualified GATE, GRE, GMAT and JRF (UGC/CSIR) examinations can also apply in the relevant area of specialization. Scores of any of these examinations including CAT taken during the last two years (i.e., on or after 01 July, 2008) will be considered valid. Candidates who have already obtained a two-year PGDM from any of the IIMs with a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale are exempted from this requirement, and can apply directly through the prescribed Application Form. Such applicants are also eligible to get a waiver of the first year course work and can directly join the second year of the programme.

The candidates short-listed on the basis of their academic record and performance in the competitive examinations mentioned above will be called to Lucknow for a special test and personal interview for final selection in April 2010 and the successful candidates will receive offers by mid-May 2010.

Admission to the programme is open to overseas candidates including NRIs and foreign nationals. Their admission will be based on GMAT/GRE scores obtained within previous one year.

Reservation

Reservation for eligible categories will be as per Government of India rules applicable for doctoral programmes at the time of admission.

Duration of the Programme and Accommodation
Students are expected to complete the programme in four years. However, under special circumstances extension of two more years may be granted. The students spent their first two years for course work and the last two years for research and thesis preparation. FPM is a full-time residential programme. However, management teachers and working executives have option to choose a flexible time frame to complete the first two years’ course work. They are allowed to complete the course work in four time slots of July-Dec/Jan-June within a total span of four years. Moreover, certain relaxations on the two years residential requirement for thesis work are also considered on the basis of merit of the case. However, they are required to complete all the requirements of Fellow Program within six years from the date of registration.
Campus hostel facility is available for stay of married students with their immediate family (spouse and children).

Financial Support
All resident Indian students admitted to the programme are given fellowship and contingency allowance up to four years. Students are provided with a fellowship stipend of Rupees 20,000 per month during I and II year and Rs. 24,000 per month subject to completion of comprehensive examination in III year and submission of thesis proposal in IV year. An additional stipend of Rs. 2000 per month will be paid during a term (3 months) in which the student is assigned academic duty (teaching and/or grading) of up to 10 hours per week. Similarly, an additional stipend of Rs. 5000 per month will be paid during a term in which the student independently teaches a full credit (30 hours) course. Those who are exempted from first year course work and are admitted directly in the second year of the programme would be eligible to get stipend only for thirty six months.
A comprehensive package of contingency grants is provided to all FPM students. The package has the following components.
1. A contingency grant of Rs. 10,000 per annum in I and II year, and Rs. 15,000 per annum during III and IV year of the programme. This grant will be available for purchase of books, stationery, computer hardware/software and travel related to thesis work.
2. A one time computer purchase grant of Rs. 50,000, which may be availed before the end of course work.
3. A domestic conference travel grant of Rs. 10,000 each in III and IV year.
4. A one time international conference travel grant of up to Rs. 75,000 which can be availed after submitting the thesis proposal.
5. A Doctoral Consortium travel grant of Rs. 10,000 in III and IV year to attend the proposed annual inter-IIM Doctoral Consortium.
6. Reimbursement of annual membership fee (student rates) of one national and one international professional society during III and IV year.
7. Reimbursement of travel expenses for case-writing and field research during III and IV year, subject to a maximum of Rs. 50,000.
8. An additional national conference grant of Rs. 10,000 each during III and IV year for those scoring a CGPA of 7.00 and above.
The Institute also provides certain additional facilities for married FPM students whose families are residing on campus. This includes
1. Reimbursement of family health insurance premium.
2. School transport facility for children to those schools already covered by the Institute’s school transport system.
In addition to these, they are exempted from fees, provided with free lodging facilities. NRIs and foreign candidates will be required to bear all the expenses including the tuition fee. Final year students are eligible to apply for the Bharti Foundation Scholarship of Rs. 4 lacs.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS ESSENTIAL:

(a) Nationality
Applicant must be a resident Indian National.

(b) Educational
Minimum of M.B.B.S. Degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.

(c) Experience
Must have either completed the required period of 12 months pre-registration Internship from a recognized hospital on or before 31st March 2010.

(d) Application Status
Completed Application must reach JIPMER on or before the prescribed closing date (i.e.) 31-12-2009.

Please Note :
'Candidates likely to complete internship by 31-03-2010 only can take up the Entrance Examination. No condonation of Compulsory Rotating Internship beyond this date shall be accepted.
'Candidates who have already done /are pursuing MD/MS in any subject at the time of counseling are not eligible for MD/MS courses.

PROCESS OF PAYMENT FOR APPLICATION

Applicants may opt to remit the prescribed cost of the Prospectus-cum-Application Form (Examination fee included) through one of the following methods.

(a) Direct cash payment at State Bank of India (SBI) counter, JIPMER Campus only. No
Application will be issued directly from the Academic Section.

(b) Bank Draft M.I.C.R. Demand Draft for Rs.1,000/ (For unreserved/Institute/OBC) and Rs.800/-
