Notification for Entrance Exam - JUN 2008

The Rashtriya Indian Military College is an Inter services Institution and a category ‘ A’ establishment of the Ministry of Defence. The College was established in 1922 with the primary aim of preparing the boys for entry into Defence Services and to provide quality all round education to young boys. Applications are invited from boys for admission to the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun (UA) for Jan 2009 Term which will be conducted at selected centres on 01(Sun) and 02 (Mon) Jun 2008.

Entry Age: Candidates appearing for the above test should not be less than 11½ years in age but should not have attained the age of 13 years as on 01 Jan 2009, i.e., they should have been born not earlier than 01 Jan 1996 and not later than 01 July 1997.

Educational Qualifications: Candidates should either be studying in class VII or passed class VII from any recognized school at the time of admission to the RIMC, i.e. on 01 Jan 2009.

Scheme of Examination: The examination comprises of: - (a) Written Examination:- The written part of the examination will consist of three papers, namely, English, Mathematics (on 01 Jun 08) and General Knowledge (on 02 Jun 08). (b) Viva Voce:- The interview will be held for only those candidates who qualify in the written exam, and the date for interview will be intimated to them by early Sep 2008. Intelligence and personality of the candidates will be tested in the interview. (c) Medical Examination:- The candidates finally selected after the viva voce will undergo a medical examination at selected Military Hospitals and only those candidates found medically fit will be considered for selection and admission to the RIMC. The medical examination of the candidates forms only a part of the system of selection and does not imply the final selection.

Examination Centres: Examination centres are generally located in the state capitals or in cities/towns as per advertised. (please refere their website)

Fee: Fees at RIMC is heavily subsidized by the Central Govt. The fee is presently Rs. 22,300/- per year. It may increase from time to time. At the time of entry a Security Deposit of Rs. 10,000/- is to be made. This is refunded when the boy passes out.

Scholarships: Scholarships are granted by various state Govts to meritorious students. The amount of scholarships varies from state to state and is in between Rs. 10,000/- to Rs. 20,000/- per annum. Continuation of Scholarship once granted is subject to merit, income and discipline.

Procedure to Obtain Application Forms: Copies of the prospectus with application forms and set of old question papers can be obtained from the Commandant, RIMC, Dehradun (UK) on payment of Rs 250/- (Rupees two hundred fifty only) through Demand Draft in favour of Commandant RIMC, Dehradun payable at STATE BANK OF INDIA, BRANCH- TEL BHAVAN DEHRADUN (CODE-1576). These will be despatched by registered parcel or Courier.

Note: - Locally printed/Xeroxed forms will be rejected.

Last Date: Applications in duplicate on prescribed form accompanied by a Bank Draft payable at STATE BANK OF INDIA, BRANCH- TEL BHAVAN DEHRADUN (CODE-1576) only will be accepted for Rs 50/- (Rs 5/- in case of Scheduled caste and scheduled tribe Candidates) in favour of Commandant RIMC, Dehradun and three passport size photographs of the candidate should reach the respective Govts (as specified in the press note) of the States, where their parents /guardians normally reside on or before 31 March 2008. Admission for the Academic Year commencing from June 2008 will be made for the following Courses:

Prasanthinilayam Campus (for Men): B.A., B.Sc.(Hons) in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences, Economics (leading to PG Courses in the respective subjects); M.B.A., M.B.A.(Finance), M.Tech.(Computer Science), and M.Tech.(Applied Optics).

Brindavan Campus (for Men): B.Sc.(Hons) in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences (leading to PG Courses in the respective subjects) and B.Com.(Hons).

Anantapur Campus (for Women): B.A., B.Com.(Hons), B.Sc.(Home Science), B.Sc.(Hons) in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biosciences; B.Ed., M.A.(English), M.A.(Telugu), M.Sc.(Home Science) with specialization in (a) Food Science & Nutrition and (b) Food Technology.

Eligibility for Admission:
Undergraduate Courses: 10+2 pattern of study/Intermediate. Minimum marks required in the X Std. examination is 60% in aggregate and 55% in General English. Candidates should have taken their final year +2 / Intermediate qualifying examination before the date of Admission Test.
Postgraduate Courses: 10+2+3 pattern of study. A First class (minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in all the three years of study) in respective degrees with 50% in General English and in case of M.Sc.(Home Science) – B.Sc.(Biosciences) and B.Sc.(MPC) candidates are also eligible to apply.
M.B.A./M.B.A.(Finance) and B.Ed.: 10+2+3 pattern of study. A First class (minimum of 60% marks in all examinations of the course) in any first degree or Postgraduate degree with 50% marks in General English in the first basic degree. Candidates of Technical Courses like B.E., B.Tech., B.Pharma., B.Sc.(Agri). etc. are exempted from the minimum requirement of 50%
marks in General English.
M.Tech.(Computer Science): A First class (60% and above) both in the first degree and M.Sc.(Mathematics)/ M.Sc. (Physics)/ M.Sc.(Computer Science)/ M.C.A./ B.E.(Computer Science) / B.Tech. (Computer Science) levels of examination with Computer Science background, and the candidates should have formally undergone the following courses: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, Computer Organisation & Architecture and Database Systems.
M.Tech.(Applied Optics): A First class (60% and above) both in the first degree and M.Sc.(Physics)/B.E./B.Tech. levels of examination with a background in Optics and Electromagnetic Theory.
Note: Eligible candidates will be short-listed by the University based on the marks of qualifying examinations. Only such candidates will be called for Admission Test.

In the case of candidates who have not received the marks statements of the final year of the first degree examination, their marks in the previous years/semesters should not be less than 60% in aggregate and 50% in General English. They should have taken their final year/semester qualifying examination before the date of the admission test.

Admissions are made as per the guidelines issued by the Govt. of India and UGC with regard to Reservation of seats. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes / Scheduled Tribes are entitled to a relaxation of 5% marks.
Admission to all the above courses will be on the basis of Admission Test and Interview which will be held in May 2008, at Prasanthi Nilayam, Andhra Pradesh.

Application form along with Information Handbook will be available from 1st December 2007 to 28th February 2008.

Courses. The Bank draft should be drawn in favour of Sri Sathya Sai University, payable at Prasanthinilayam/Puttaparthi. Sri Sathya Sai University offers the following courses under the auspices of the Sathya Sai Mirpuri College of Music (for boys) in Prasanthinilayam. The admissions will be made for the Academic Year commencing from June 2008.

FULL-TIME COURSES
1) FOUNDATION COURSE - Duration: 2 years: (Carnatic, Hindustani) Vocal, Veena, Mridangam, Sitar, and Tabla.
ELIGIBILITY: Candidates should have passed 7th Standard of study, and be 13 to 20 years of age.

IIA Ph.D. PROGRAMME 2008

Applications are invited for the admissions of IIA Ph.D. Programme -2008 from the candidates with outstanding academic credentials having (or completing by July 2008) M.Sc. degree in Physics/Mathematics or B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech. IIA Ph.D. Programme
The IIA Ph.D. programme forms a vital component of research and training at the Institute. Graduate students selected under this programme work at IIA, towards a Ph.D. degree. Selection to the Programme that begins in August 2008 is (a) through the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)-2008; (b) candidates who have qualified the UGC-CSIR NET (2008) in Physics, with fellowship; or (c) those who have obtained above 95 percentile in GATE-2008 in Physics.

Students with M.Sc (Physics/Mathematics/Astronomy), B.E./M.E. (Electrical/ Electronics/ Mechanical/ Instrumentation) are eligible to apply for this Programme.
Students admitted under this programme are initially offered a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and can qualify for a Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) after a period of 2 years. The total tenure of the Fellowship is 5 years.

The stipend of JRF is Rs. 12,000/- p.m. and that of SRF is Rs. 14,000/- p.m. In addition an annual book grant is provided.

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), an autonomous research institute funded by the Department of Science & Technology, is devoted to research in Astronomy & Astrophysics, and the Related Physics and Instrumentation. IIA has a rich history of over two centuries and has to its credit some important discoveries such as those of the Evershed effect, atmosphere on Jupiter's satellite Ganymede, the rings around Uranus and the asteroid Ramanujan.

Instrumentation - UV Imaging Telescope for the Indian Astronomy Satellite (ASTROSAT); back-end instruments for the various observing facilities. Comet Machholz - observed from VBO - NGC 925 observed with the 2m HCT.

Facilities: The Institute's research activities are supported by excellent facilities at its headquarters in Bangalore and its field stations at Kodaikanal, Kavalur, Gauribidanur, Hosakote and Hanle.
The Solar Observatory: located at Kodaikanal consists of a Tower Tunnel Telescope, Spectroheliographs and Ionosondes.
The Vainu Bappu Observatory(VBO) : located at Kavalur has the 2.3m Vainu Bappu Telescope(VBT) and the 1m Zeiss Telescope.
Gauribidanur Radio Heliograph : located at the Gauribidanur Radio Observatory of Raman Research Institute and IIA.
The Indian Astronomical Observatory(IAO) : located at Hanle, in the Ladakh region, houses the remotely operated 2m Himalayan Chandra Telescope (HCT). This observatory, at an altitude of 4500m is the world's highest ground based facility for optical and near-IR astronomy. A High Altitude Gamma-ray Telescope (HAGAR) is also being set up at IAO, in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai.
Centre for Research and Education in Science and Technology(CREST) : located at Hosakote, hosts the remote controls of the HCT; facility for integration and calibration of space payloads and laboratory for experiments in optical physics.
