ADMISSION NOTICE FOR THE NEXT COURSE IN
DIPLOMA IN RAILWAY ENGINEERING

Admission Notice
The Institution of Permanent Way Engineers (India) Invites applications for admission to the Correspondence Course of Diploma in Railway Engineering for the academic year 2008-09. The Course comprises of two semesters of 6 months each. Some of the salient features of the Diploma Course are given below :

1. Eligibility:
Non-Railway persons: The applicant should be a 3-years Diploma holder in any discipline of Engineering recognised by Central/State or UT Government or a Science/Engineering Graduate or a Graduate having had Maths or Science as one of the subjects in Intermediate/Plus 2 of S.S.C.

Railway Personnel working as employees of Indian Railways including employees of Konkan Railway, Port Trust Railways, RITES, IRCON, CRIS, CONCOR, DMRC, RVNL, MVRC and other Railway PSUs : High School/SSC or equivalent qualification with maths or science and having a minimum of 3 years regular service in Railways or having 3-years Diploma in any Engineering discipline recognised by Central/State or Union Territory Government or a Science/ Engineering Graduate or a Graduate having had Maths or Science as one of the subjects in Intermediate/Plus 2 of SSC.

2. Course Fees ..
* Railway Personnel (Serving)- Semester-I: Rs. 1000/-; Semester-II: Rs.1400/-
* Non-Railway persons - Semester-I: Rs.1500/-; Semester-II: Rs.1900/-
* Optional Contact Classes - Semester-I: Rs. 1000/-; Semester-II: Rs. 1000/-


3. Recognition & Concessions ..
The Ministry of Railways has recognised the Diploma Course and has granted the following concessions/benefits:
* For Railway Personnel: The Ministry of Railways has approved the Diploma Course as an additional qualification for promotion to all selection posts for Railway employees in Group C Category.

* For Non-Railway persons: The Ministry of Railways accepts the Diploma as a desirable additional qualification for recruitment to various posts through Railway Recruitment Board in technical departments of the Railways.

4. How to apply ..
The prospectus containing the application form along with other details can be obtained from the office of IPWE (India), address given below on payment through Bank Draft of Rs.75/- in favour of IPWE (India) payable at New Delhi along with a self addressed stamped (Rs.15/-) envelop (size 25 cm x 15 cm.) or on cash payment of Rs.75/- personally at our Counters at Rail Bhavan/Baroda House, New Delhi.

Admissions for the current session will commence from July 2008 and the last date for submission of applications is 31st August 2008.



The Institution organises a Diploma Course in 'Railway Engineering' for the Railwaymen as well as for the outsiders to update their knowledge of Railway Engineering.

The Diploma Course in Railway Engineering consists of two Semesters of six months each. Semester I covers basic knowledge of Railway working in the fields of General Management of Railways, Civil Engineering (Works); Civil Engineering (Track), Civil Engineering ( Bridges), Signal & Telecommunication Engineering; Operational Management, Commercial Management, Stores/Material Management, Personnel Management, Financial Management of Railways & Railway Accidents & Safety measures.

Semester II covers basic knowledge of Railway working in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering and specialized knowledge of Railway working in the fields of Track Structure, Track Maintenance, Track Modernization, Works Engineering, Bridge Engineering, Survey & Construction of Railway lines, Railway sidings, and Disaster Management.

Semester-II covers specialized knowledge of Permanent Way Engineering, which includes Track structure, its Maintenance and Modernisation, Works, Bridge Engineering, Survery and construction of Railway Lines, Railway Sidings, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Disaster Management.

Ministry of Railways have extended certain incentives viz. in the case of Railway employees who possess Diploma Certificate in Railway Engineering will be considered additional qualification for promotion to Selection posts in Group 'C' category.

In the case of outsiders, the Railway Ministry has decided that passing of Diploma Course will be considered as an additional qualification for recruitment to various technical posts of Railways by Railway Recruitment Boards.

The fees for Semester I of Diploma Course is Rs.1000 for railwaymen and Rs.1500 for outsiders. The fees for Semester II is Rs.1400 for railwaymen and Rs.1900 for outsiders. In addition, there is a fee of Rs.1000 for optional contact classes. Contact Classes are normally held every year in the month of October at Indian Social Institute, 10, Institutional Area, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.

The Diploma course in Railway Engineering was started in 1997. The course has been very popular and uptil March, 2008, 17208 students have enrolled to the course. Out of these 3438 have successfully completed the course and hold the Diploma in Railway Engineering.

The examination of Semester-I is usually held in February and of Semester-II in December each year at six centres viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Secunderabad, Chennai and Lucknow.
