(Agricultural Information Technology)The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has its beginning with an Agricultural School established at Saidapet, Chennai in 1876 which later blossomed to a college. In 1906, the college was shifted to Coimbatore. In 1920, the college was affiliated to the University of Madras with the introduction of a three-year degree program. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore was the only institute for Agricultural Education for the whole of South India. In 1958, it was recognized as a Post-Graduates Centre leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. The Agricultural College & Research Institute, Madurai was established in 1965. These two colleges formed the nucleus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, when it was established during 1971 offering four year B.Sc. (Ag.) degree program.In 1972, two new degree programs of B.Sc. (Horticulture) and B.E. (Agriculture) were started. In 1979, the Faculty of Horticulture was established. In 1980, B.Sc. (Home Science) was started at Madurai Campus. The third Agricultural College was started at Killikulam in 1984 and the fourth at Navalur Kuttappattu, Trichy in 1989,offering B.Sc. (Agriculture) program. B.Sc. (Forestry) program was started during 1985. Presently the B.Sc. (Horticulture) degree program is being offered at Horticultural College and Research Institute, Periyakulam and B.Sc. (Forestry) at Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam. B.Tech.(Agricultural Engineering) is offered at Agricultural Engineering College & Research Institute, Kumulur. B.Sc. (Home Science) degree program is offered at Home Science College and Research Institute, Agricultural College Campus, Madurai. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute, Karaikal governed by the Government of Puducherry is affiliated to TNAU where B.Sc.(Agriculture) course is being offered. B.Sc. (Agriculture) and B.Sc. (Horticulture) program are being offered by Self-Financing Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai which are affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University since 1999. Two more self-financing colleges namely Vanavarayar Institute of Agriculture, Pollachi and Thanthai Rover Institute of Agriculture and Rural Development (TRIARD), Perambalur are also offering B.Sc. (Agriculture)during 2008-09 academic year. Apart from these academic institutes, the University conducts research programs at 36 research stations spread all over Tamil Nadu.The ever changing agricultural scenario made the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University to start the following new degrees viz. B.Tech.(Food Process Engineering) during 1998-99, B.Tech.(Biotechnology), B.Tech.(Horticulture) during 2002-03 and B.Tech.(Energy and Environmental Engineering) during 2004 – 2005. A new degree program, B.Tech.(Bioinformatics) was introduced from the academic year 2006-07. Considering the retailing boom and growth of IT services in India and elsewhere, two new courses B.S. (Agribusiness Management) and B.Tech. (Agricultural Information Technology) we are introduced from the academic Year 2007 - 08.At present the University is offering the following 12 Undergraduate Degree Programs of four years duration.i. AGE LIMITCandidates should not have completed the age of 21 years on the first day of July of the admission year for all the courses. However, for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes there is no age limit.iii. RESERVATIONSThe reservation categories are mutually exclusive and a candidate can opt for only one reservation category though the candidate may be eligible under one or more category. The reservation will be followed as per the orders of the Government of Tamil Nadu at the time of admission.A. Rule of Reservation is as follows :Open competition - 31%Backward - 30%*(* Within the 30% reservation for Backward Classes 26.5% Backward Classes other than BC Muslims3.5% for Backward class Muslims)Most backward/Denotified - 20%Schedule Caste - 18%Scheduled Tribe - 1%* Tamil Nadu Ordinance No. 4 of 2007 published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette extraordinary No 262 dt 15.09.2007, provide the reservation in respect of annual permitted strength in each branch or faculty for admission into educational institutions in the state including private educational institutions for the Backward Class Muslims shall be three and one-half percent with in the thirty percent reservation for Backward Class as provided in the 1994 Act and in 2006 Act.B. Ten percent seats are filled by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi through a National Level Entrance Examination for B.Sc. (Agriculture), B.Sc.(Horticulture), B.Sc. (Forestry), B.Sc.(Home Science) and B.Tech. ( Agricultural Engineering)C. Certain number of seats are also reserved for the following categories, as prescribed by the Government of Tamil Nadu under G.O. MS No 167 dt 25/4/08. A separate certificate with necessary details has to be filed along with application for claiming each of these reservations.a. Ex-servicemen (attach proof)Six Seats in B.Sc.(Ag.) and One Seat each in B.Sc (Hort.) and in B.Tech. (Agrl. Engg.) Degree Programme is reserved for Son/Daughter of Ex-servicemen. The applicant should possess minimum qualifying marks and should attach the proof of evidence along with the application.b. Physically Handicapped (attach proof)Three percent of the seats in the undergraduate degree programme are reserved for Physically Handicapped candidates. The applicant should possess minimum qualifying marks and should attach the proof of evidence along with the application. Maximum age relaxble to 26 Years.c. Freedom Fighter (attach proof)One Seat is reserved in B.Sc.(Ag.) for the descendents of Freedom Fighter. For this the certificate should be furnished from Tahsildar of the respective Taluk and enclosed along with the application.d. Eminent Sports Person (attach proof)Four Seats in B.Sc.(Ag.), and one seat in B.Sc.(Hort.), is reserved under sports quota for eminent sports persons. The applicant should possess the minimum qualifying marks and attach the proof of evidence along with the application along with copies of the certificate issued by the Sport Development Authority of Tamil Nadu. Certificates obtained at National/ State/ District / Division level will be considered on the order of merit and hence copies of all relevant certificates should be attached.iv. MODE OF SELECTIONCandidates will be selected on the basis of the marks in their qualifying examination and ranked as per the procedure given in section(i). Single window counseling system will be followed.v. SYSTEM OF EDUCATIONThe pattern of instruction and evaluation in the University is the “Semester Course Credit System” in the medium of English. An enrolled student in order to earn a Bachelor’s Degree should complete the course credits prescribed from time to time and shall have earned a minimum Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.50 out of 10.00.vi. NOTE BOOK COMPUTERS (LAPTOP)Laptop is mandatory for the undergraduate students of TNAU.The e-teaching/e-learning practiced in TNAU necessited the students to have note books for learning as well as writing e-examination.Therefore the admitted candidates should bring the laptop with the recommended specification at the time of commencement of class.SCHOLARSHIPSScholarships and fee concessions such as Adi Dravida Welfare Scholarships, Central Government Scholarships, State Government Free Education for Student from Non-Graduate Family, Periyar Endowment Scholarships and fellowships and scholarships from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi and other agencies are available for the benefit of deserving enrolled candidates. These may vary according to the degree / college to which they are admitted and respective funding agencies.Industry SponsorshipFive Seats each in all the 12 undergraduate programmes are alloted to the members of the Agribusiness consortium. The candidate should have minimum educational qualification prescribed for the course. For details regarding membership for Consortium of Agribusiness, kindly contact the Dean (Agriculture) & Chairman Admissions, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. A request to this effect should be furnished along with the application. Candidates from all over India are eligible to apply.Non Resident Indian (NRI) QuotaFive seats each in all the 12 undergraduate programmes are allotted under NRI quota. The minimum qualification for admission under this quota is as follows:1. Age : 25 years2. Minimum marks : Pass in Qualifying Examination3. Fees payable : USD 2100/ Semester4. The candidates should be a Non Resident Indian.5. A candidate also be sponsored by Non Resident Indian (NRI), who is a close relative of the candidate.FACILITIESi) Hostels with WiFi facility are available for both men and women in each campus and the messes being run on a dividing system basis. All students are expected to reside in the hostel attached to the Colleges. In exceptional cases, the Dean is empowered to permit students to be day scholars.ii) A Students’ Centre with Canteen is present in each campus to provide stationeries and essential items. Plenty of scope for extra-curricular activities such as sports, literary and social service activities.iii) Sports facilities and modern fitness centre is available in all campuses.INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATESCompleted application form should reach the Dean (Agriculture), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore - 641 003, on or before 5.00 PM on the date prescribed in the published notification and application form.
