Indian Institute of Technology Indore(IIT-I)announces admission to the PhD programme starting from January 2011 in the following disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Eligibility Criteria for PhD Admission
Ph.D. in Engineering:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Engineering Disciplines, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in the relevant branch of Engineering with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
2. B. Tech. degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Ph.D. in Sciences:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Science Disciplines, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in a Science subject with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
2. Masters degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.
3. B.Tech. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Ph.D. in Economics and Philosophy:
For admission to the Ph.D. Programme in Economics and Philosophy, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:
1. Masters degree in Arts/ Commerce with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent. Masters degree in Science/Engineering/Agriculture/Environment Sciences/ International Business with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks may be considered for research areas consistent with the academic background and special interests.
2. B.Tech. from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Category of Admission:
The Institute admits Ph.D. students under the categories of:
(i) Full-Time Scholars-
A. Institute Research Scholars with Teaching Assistantship (TA) #
B. Govt./ Semi-Govt. Fellowship
C. Sponsored candidates (SW) *
D. Self-financed (Indian/Foreign)/ Study Leave (SF)*
E. ICCR Awardees (Foreign Students)
(ii) Part-Time Scholars-
A. Institute Faculty/ Staff (IS)
B. Institute Project Staff (PS)
C. Institute Research Assistant (RA) #
D. External Candidates (Sponsored) (EX)*
E. Candidate from Colleges/ Educational Institutes (CT)*
# As per MHRD Directives, candidate selected under TA/RA category cannot accept or hold any appointment paid or otherwise or receive any emoluments, salary, stipend from any source during the tenure of TA/RA ship. Hence, candidates selected for TA/RA and having employment with or without pay with any organization/institution/establishment/project etc. must leave the job and submit relieving certificate before joining the Ph.D. programme under TA/RA category.
* Sponsored candidates have to submit letter of sponsorship based on Appendix I/ II/ III/ IV respectively of the application guidelines.
For Institute Fellowship i.e. TA, RA; (except candidates holding M.Tech / M.E. degree) all should have qualified GATE or CSIR-JRF or CSIR -NET or UGC-JRF or UGC-NET.
Candidates not having a valid GATE score or not having CSIR/UGC/NBHM/DBT award can be considered for admission to the PhD programme if they have minimum of 2 years of professional work experience. However, they will not be considered for Teaching/Research Assistantship.
Selection
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test and/or interview, based on performance in GATE/NET, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.
Reservations:
The reservation of seats in admissions for SC, ST, OBC categories and for persons with disability (PD) will be as per Government of India rules. OBC (Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates:
Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ ST applicants.
Financial Support:
The Institute assistantships will be available to eligible (Indian) students as per prevailing (MHRD, GOI) norms, as applicable from time to time.
The students are encouraged and expected to complete the programme in about four years time. The period of validity of Ph.D. registration for all candidates is six years from the date of confirmation of registration (which commences after successful completion of course credit requirements). However, the extension of fellowship for the entire duration of Ph.D. is not automatic and is subject to institute rules.
As part of the training, Ph.D. students are expected to assist in running the undergraduate labs and in other teaching and research assignments.
Application Procedure:
Duly filled Application Form, Statement of Purpose and two Letters of Recommendation (sealed by the referee) should be submitted by post in one envelope. Application forms can be downloaded from institute website www.iiti.ac.in
Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials should be sent to the Convener, Ph.D. Admissions, Indian Institute of Technology Indore, M-Block, IET, DAVV Campus, Khandwa Road, Indore, 452017, M.P., to reach on or before October 31, 2010.
Candidates applying for more than one discipline should submit a separate application for each discipline.
There is no Application Fees.

Important Dates
1. Last Date for the receipt of completed Application Forms by IIT Indore is: 31-10-2010.
2. List of the shortlisted candidates will be displayed on the website by 13-11- 2010.
3. Interviews will be held during 24 November – 3 December 2010.
