Admission Advertisement for BS Optometry / Physician Assistant MS Medical Lab. Tech. and MPhil Optometry for First Semester 2008-09

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, is a University established under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.The Institute offers the following off-campus work-integrated learning programmes:

1. BS OPTOMETRY:
This 4-year Integrated First Degree programme is conducted at Chennai in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya - Elite School of Optometry, and at Hyderabad in collaboration with L.V.Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) - Bausch & Lomb School of Optometry. Input Requirements: Pass in 10+2 from Central / State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics / Biology.

2. BS PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT:
This 4-year Integrated First Degree programme is conducted at Chennai in collaboration with Madras Medical Mission as well as with Frontier Lifeline – Dr. KM Cherian Heart Foundation. Input Requirements: Pass in 10+2 from Central / State Board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics/ Biology.

3. MS MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY:
This 3-year Higher Degree Programme is conducted at Chennai in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya -Medical Research Foundation. Input requirements: B.Sc. in experimental sciences with exposure to Biology and Chemistry, or equivalent.

4. M.Phil. OPTOMETRY:
This 2-year Higher Degree programme is conducted at Chennai in collaboration with Sankara Nethralaya - Medical Research Foundation. Input requirements: B.S. Optometry of BITS or equivalent.

The short-listed candidates for above programmes will be required to take a Written Test at Chennai / Hyderabad on Sunday, 13th July 2008, which will be followed by Interviews (a) on Monday, 14th July 2008 at Chennai for all Sankara Nethralaya collaborative programmes; (b) on Tuesday, 15th July 2008 at Chennai for BS Physician Assistant programme with both the collaborations, and (c) on Wednesday, 16th July 2008 at Hyderabad for LVPEI BS Optometry.

2. Eligibility
Eligibility for Admissions:
(i) For admission to all the above programmes except B.Pharm.(Hons.) and M.Sc.(Hons.) Biological Sciences: Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and adequate proficiency in English.
(ii) For admission to B.Pharm.(Hons.) and M.Sc.(Hons.): Biological Sciences programmes: Candidates should have passed the 12th examination of 10+2 system from a recognized Central or State board or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology or Mathematics and adequate proficiency in English. Candidates having both Mathematics and Biology in 10+2 have to decide whether they wish to appear in Mathematics or Biology subjects in BITSAT-2008.

Admission to all the programmes is subject to the conditions given below.

The candidate should have obtained a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects (if he/she has taken Mathematics in BITSAT) or a minimum of aggregate 80% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology subjects (if he/she has taken Biology in BITSAT) subjects in 12th examination, with at least 60% marks in each of the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics / Biology subjects.

Students who are appearing for 12th examination in 2008 or who have passed 12th Examination in 2007 only are eligible to appear in the BITSAT-2008 test. Students who have passed 12th examination in 2006 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in BITSAT-2008. Students who are presently studying in BITS at any of its campuses are not eligible to appear in BITSAT test.

Admissions will be made purely on merit. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtained by the candidate in the BITSAT-2008.

In addition to the application made earlier for registering in BITSAT-2008, interested and eligible candidates should apply for admission as per the procedure given below. Only those candidates who have passed their 12th year examination in 2008 or 2007 and have appeared in BITSAT-2008 will be included in the merit list for admission. Students who have passed 12th examination in 2006 or earlier are NOT eligible to apply.

Direct Admission of Board toppers:
First rank students of all the central and state boards in India and who have taken Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in their 12th examination will be given direct admission to the program of their choice, irrespective of their BITSAT-2008 score. Board toppers who have taken Physics, Chemistry and Biology in their 12th examination are eligible for direct admissions to B.Pharm (Hons) and M.Sc. (Hons) Biological Sciences programmes only. However, they should have obtained the minimum marks in PCM/PCB subject in 12th examination, as described above. 3. DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE EDUCATIONAL STRUCTURE AND SOME SPECIAL PROVISIONS
1. All students who have taken Physics, Chemistry and Mathematic subjects in BITSAT and admitted to M.Sc. (Hons) programmes will be given an opportunity to work under the dual degree scheme for one of the B.E. (Hons.)/B.Pharm.(Hons.) programmes, assignment being made by competition on their performance at BITS at the end of first year, separately in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses. Students who have taken Mathematics in BITSAT will be considered under “First Priority” category for allotment of dual degree. Students who have taken Biology in BITSAT will be required to take additional remedial Mathematics course and they will be able to apply for dual degree only under the “Other priorities” category which is operated after satisfying the known needs of “First Priority” category.
2. The Institute’s well known PRACTICE SCHOOL option is available to all students admitted.

4. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Interested and eligible candidates should apply online at
http://www.bitsadmission.com/fdadmn/ (Complete the application form Online) and take the print out of the filled form. The completed application form along with the prescribed fees of Rs. 200/- through challan or demand draft should be sent to Admissions Officer, BITS, Pilani – 333 031.

Demand drafts should be drawn in favour of Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani payable at State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur, Pilani (Code: 10398) or UCO Bank, Vidya Vihar, Pilani (Code: 0150) or State Bank of India, Zuari Nagar, Goa (Branch Code: 1976) or State Bank of Hyderabad, Panjagutta (Code 20072).
