IISc Young Science Fellowship Programme (YSFP)

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, invites applications from II year B Sc/Integrated M.Sc. students for the award of Young Science Fellowship 2008

Eligibility Criteria:
Students must have studied Mathematics as one of the subjects at plus two level, studying in the second year B.Sc./Integrated M.Sc. programme in Science subjects at any College/University in India and secured a minimum 60% marks in the first year.

Candidates Studying Medicine / Veterinary / Dental / Pharmacy / Engineering are not eligible

Features of YSFP:
The selected candidates will be permitted to spend six weeks at the Institute during May-June 2008. During the Programme, there will be organized lectures by the faculty of IISc., problem solving sessions and project work.

Accommodation and Mess Facilities:
Institute will not provide any accommodation to selected participants and participants have to make their own accommodation arrangements during the period of the Programme. However, they will be provided with Mess facility.

Financial Support:


IISc will provide:
Traveling allowance – equivalent to II Class train fare, from college/residence to IISc and back.
Free board at IISc.
Fellowship Grant of Rs 5000/-
A Book grant of Rs. 1,500/- .


Relaxation criteria for SC/ST/PH students

There will be a suitable relaxation in the eligibility criteria for SC/ST/PH students.

Summer Fellowships in Science and Engineering for SC/ST students

Eligibility:
Applicants must be studying in the final year M.Sc. in Biological Sciences, Physics, Chemistry/Mathematics/ B.E./ B.Tech.in Engineering or passed M.Sc./ B.E.,/ B.Tech Engineering during 2006-07.

Selection Criteria:
IISc.will evolve suitable criteria for selecting the candidates for the programme.

Financial Support:
IISc. will provide:
- Travelling allowance equivalent to II Class train fare from College/residence to IISc. and back.
- Free board and lodging (on shared basis) at IISc.
- A one-time fellowship of Rs.5000/- and a book grant of Rs.1500/-.

Features of the Programme:
The selected students will work with one of the IISc. Faculty members and learn various techniques used in research for a period of one month during May-June2008.

ADMISSIONS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2008-2009

Applications are invited for admission to the following programs (i) Research [Ph.D/M.Sc (Engg)] (ii) Course [M.Tech/M.Des] (iii) Integrated Ph.D and (iv) External Registration Program at the Institute. Qualification for eligibility specializations, areas of reserch and other details are available at website http://www.iisc.ernet.in/admissions. Candidates who have not yet completed their qualifying examiantions and expect to complete all the requirements for the degree (including all examinations, dissertaiton projects, viva voice etc.) before July 31, 2008, are also eligile to apply.

(i) RESEARCH PROGRAMS [Ph.D/M.Sc(Engg)]
Science Faculty (Ph.D): Astronomy & Astrophysics, Microbiology & Cell Biology, Biochemistry Molecular Biophysics, Ecological Sciences Molecular Reproduction Development and Genetics, High Energy Physics Organic Chemistry, Inorganic & Physical Chemistry ,Organic Chemistry,Physics, Materials Research Solid State & Structural Chemistry, Mathematics, Management Studies.
Engineering Faculty (M Sc [Engg] and Ph D): Aerospace Engineering, Atmospheric & Oceanic Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Automation, Earth Sciences (New Program), Electrical Communicatin ?Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Design & Technology, Instrumentation, Management Studies, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Research, Product Design & Manufacturing, Sustainable Technologies and Supercomputer Education & Research.
Interdisciplinary programs (Ph.D): Chemical Biology, Earth System Science, Mathematical Sciences, Nanoengineering for integrated Systems, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.

ELIGIBILITY: An applicant possessing minimum second class in the following qualifications/degrees in an appropriate area shall be eligible to apply for admission for Research Program.
-Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in an appropriate field of Engineeirng/Technology/Architechture, or Master's degree in Sciene in an appropriate field/Agriculture/Biotechnology; or MBBS; or M.Pharma or M.V.Sc or Master's degree in Gernamn Language (for Ph.D in German); or in Economics, Georgraphy, Social work, Psychology, Management, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computer Science/Application, Architecture as applicable to the respective departments.
-Master's degree in Engineering/Technology in an appropriate field, or MBA or equivalent degree (post BE/B.Tech) as applicable to the respective departments.

Qualifying in one of the following Entrance Tests is mandatory for candidates (applying for Ph.D in Science Faculty and Interdisciplinary Program) eligible under (a) and desirable for candidates eligible under (b). CSIR-UGC NET for JRF or UGC-NET for JRF or DBT/ICMR JRF or GATE; or JEST or NBHM or IISc Entrance Test.
IISc Entrance Test is conducted in Atmospheric Science, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Ecological Scienes, Mathematics, Management Studies, Materials Science. (Note: IISc Entrance Test is not conducted in Engineering disciplines).

(ii) COURSE PROGRAMS [ME/M.Tech/M. Des]
(a) ME in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineeirng, Mechanical Engineeirng, Materials Engineering, Microelectronics, Signal Processing, Systems Science & Automation, and Telecommunication Engineering.

ELIGIBILITY: Minimum second class in Bachelor's degree in appropriate field of Engineering/Technology or Post B.Sc AIMIE or equivalent degree in Engineering and valid GATE score.

Selection is based on GATE score only.

(b) M.Tech in Electronics Design and Technology, Computational Science, Climate Science(New Program) and Instrumentation.
ELIGIBILITY:
Minimum second class in the qualifying examination:
(i) Electronics Design and Technology: Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with Electronics as one of the subjects of study or Post B.Sc AMIE or equivalent in Engineering or Master's degree in Physics (with Electronics as special subject) and 2 years experience in Electronics harware.
(ii) Computational Science: Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology, or Master's degree in Science (in all cases strong mathematical and programming background is required).
(iii) Climate Science: Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology, or Master's degree in Physical Science.
(iv) Instrumentation: Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology in Instrumentaion/ Instrumentaion 7 Control Engineering/Electronics & Instrumentation/Electronics or Master's degree in Science with specialization in Instrumentation/Electronics.
Section for (i), (ii), (iii) is absed on an aptitude test and interview after short-listing based on the GATE scores and for (iv) based on GATE Score only.

(c) M DES in Product Design & Engineering:
ELIGIBILITY:
Minimum second class in Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/Design/Architecture or Post B.Sc AMIE or equivalent degree in Engineering including Architecture.
Selection is based on the Design Aptitude Test and Interview after short-listing based on GATE/CEED scores.

(iii) INTEGRATED Ph.D PROGRAMS
(i) Biological (ii) Chemical (iii) Physical (iv) Mathamatical Sciences
ELIGIBILITY:
First class in B.Sc Degree under 10+2+3 years systems as indicated below for the various discipline.
(i) Biological Sciences:B.Sc degree in Physical, Chemical or Biological Science (including Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and AGricultural Science).
(ii) Chemical Sciences: B.Sc degree with Chemistry as one of the main subjects with Mathematics at PUC (Plus 2) level.
(iii) Physical Sciences: B.Sc. degre with Physics as a main subject.
(iv) Mathematical Sciences: B.Math or B.Stat or B.Sc or BA degree with Mathematics as one of the subject or Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
All candidates should qualify in IISc Entrance Tst 2008. The short listing of candidates for interview is based on performance in the IISc Entrance Test.

(iv) EXTERNAL REGISTRATION PROGRAM (ERP)
Sciece Faculty (Ph.D only): All departments in the Science Faculty except High Energy Physics.
Engineering Faculty (M.Sc [Engg] & Ph.D): All departments in the Engineering Faculty except Management Studies and Sustainable TEchnologies
ELIGIBILITY:
Qualifications are the same as for regular candidates. Two years experience in the curent employment. AGe NOT greater than 35 years for M.Sc (Engg) and 40 years for Ph.D as on 01-04-2008.
Please note: Entrance Test: or equivalent (like CSIR-UGC/UGC-NET for JRF/DBT/ICMR JRF/GATE/NBHM) is desireable.

Selection is based on performance interview to be conducted at the Institute.
Registration for SC/ST/PH and Kashmiri-Migrant candidates: As per Govt. of India regulations, (Grade/Class of qualifying examination is relaxed to a pass class for SC/ST candidates)

SCHOLARSHIPS: All regular students who join the Institute are eligible for IISc scholarship/fellowship from CSIR/UGC/ICMR/MHRD/AICTE/NBHM/as the case may be. Scholarships from GE/INFOSYS/IBM/HP/TATA/PHILIPS/BELL LAB are available for meritorious students.

(a) Getting application forms.
Research, Course and Integrated Ph D programme Application Forms can be obtained by any one of the following two methods:
(1) Approach the CANARA BANK Branches* and get the forms against a cash payment of Rs. 700/-.
(2) Send your request for application form with 2 address slips (stickers), program to which admission is sought along with the demand draft for Rs. 700/- for general candidates and Rs.350/- for SC/ST/PH candidates with a copy of the caste/PH certificate to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560 012. The DD must be drawn in favor of “Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore”.
(3) Online application - Online submission of application can be made by accessing the IISc website: www.iisc.nernet.in/admissions. w.e.f.04-02-2008. Online application fee is Rs.500/- for general candidates and Rs.25/- for SC/ST/PH candidates.

Sponsored candidates from DRDO, Defence Services, ISRO, BEL, AIR, BARC, BSF, NAL, must write to the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Admissions Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore for obtaining application form along with a DD for Rs.700/- drawn in favour of “Registrar, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore”.

External registration program (ERP)
