ADMISSION TO M.TECH. / M.PHIL. PROGRAMMES (2008-2009)

About the University
Established by the Government of India in 1926, on the model of the Royal School of Mines, (U.K.), ISM University was given the status of a deemed university in 1967. ISM University is under the direct governance of MHRD, Government of India, it has been focusing its academic and research activities on various aspects of Indian industry. The University has maintained its all India character drawing faculty and students from all over India. It occupies a unique position, not only in India but also in Asia pacific and has contributed to the development of mineral sector substantially. Starting with just a couple of undergraduate programmes at its inception the University today has become one of the leading technical institute of the country, offering large number of UG/PG degree programmes including B.Tech, Integrated, Dual Degree,M.Tech,M.Phil,2 Yrs. M.Sc., 3 Yrs.M. Sc.Tech, MBA, Ph.D and D.Sc degrees.

Scholarship
The scholarship will be offered to those students who have qualified GATE (for M. Tech. programme)/NET (for M. Phil. programme) examination. However a GATE/NET qualified student does not automatically become eligible to receive scholarship. The scholarship will be offered to the students on the basis of merit in the respective category. Non GATE/NET candidates and sponsored candidates are not eligible for scholarship.

Hostel Facility
The M. Tech./M. Phil. Programmes are fully residential and students are essentially required to reside in hostel. Separate girls hostel is also available within the campus. Students manage their own messes in their hostel and bear the expenses each month. If the parents/local guardian resides within a radius of 8 kms of the campus, the student may be permitted to stay with his/her parents/guardian.

Admission Procedure
Application for Admission
Request for Application Form and Information Bulletin may be sent on plain paper to the Assistant Registrar (Academic), Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad along with a crossed demand draft of Rs.500/- drawn in favour of Registrar, Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad payable at State Bank of India, ISM Campus Branch, Dhanbad (Code No. 1641) and a self addressed unstamped envelope of size 23 cms X 15 cms superscribing ‘Request for PG Application Form’ on or before March 21, 2008. The Application Form and Information Bulletin can also be obtained from the Academic Section on payment of Rs.500/- at the cash counter of the University up to 28 March, 2008. A candidate may apply for a maximum upto three programmes only. If candidate applies for more than three programmes, in a single application form, his/her application will summarily be rejected.

Qualifications
Candidates should possess Bachelors degree in appropriate branch of Engineering/Technology from AICTE approved institution with at least 55% marks in aggregate. Similarly, candidates opting for admission in M.Phil programme should possess 55% marks in the respective qualifying examinations form an approved college/university. The requirement of minimum percentage of marks may be waived off for the teacher who have joined the teaching profession on or before February 28, 1991.

The eligibility criteria for different programmes are presented in the information bulletin. The candidates who have appeared in the qualifying examination may also apply for admission. However, they will be required to submit their final result of the qualifying examination latest by August 31, 2008 failing which their admission will be cancelled. The candidates whose final results are not declared, the weightage will be considered upto 7th semester or pre final stage. Candidates must have completed all their examinations before admission to the PG programme, except declaration of the results..

Submission of Application Form
The duly filled in Application Form should be accompanied with the following documents.
a) A recent passport size photograph pasted on each application form.
b) The copies of the certificates and marksheets (including GATE/NET score) starting matriculation/school final examination attested by a Gazetted Officer or the principal of the institution last attended. The original certificates are required to be produced at the time of admission.
c) Original Migration Certificate is required at the time of admission.
d) An unstamped self addressed envelope of size 23 cms X 15 cms.
e) Self addressed sticker 4 pieces
Applications received without the above documents will be rejected. Application fee once paid will not be refundable under any circumstances.

Programme Fee for the first semester has to be paid at the time of admission. Caution money and security deposits are refundable only after completion of the programme. Fees for subsequent semesters are to be paid before the commencement of the respective semesters.
The duly filled-in application form must reach the Assistant Registrar (Academic), Indian School of Mines University, Dhanbad – 826004 latest by April 04, 2008.

Admission
Admission to a programme shall be made on the basis of (a) GATE/NET Score, (b) performance in the qualifying degree, and (c) performance of the candidate in the interview to be conducted at the University. However written test will be conducted for all candidates seeking admission to M. Tech. programme in Computer Application on June 09, 2008. If sufficient GATE/NET candidates are not available, Non GATE/NET candidates may be considered for admission to M. Tech./M. Phil. Programmes. Non GATE/NET candidates and sponsored candidates called for interview will have to appear a written test on June 09, 2008. No TA/DA will be admissible for attending the written test/interviews. The interviews will be held on June 10-11, 2008.

Reservation
a) Reservation for SC/ST candidates will be as per Government of India directive/guidelines circulated from time to time in each programme.
b) One seat is reserved in each discipline for physically handicapped students subject to
maximum of 3%.
c) One seat will be kept reserved for J&K migrants.
d) Some seats are reserved for sponsored candidates with minimum 2 year experience in
the relevant field of reputed organizations.
e) Some seats are earmarked for Parsi candidates, and one seat for ward/widow of Defence personnel, provided they fulfil eligibility criteria and qualify in the corresponding test.

Sponsorship
Sponsored candidates will not be eligible for scholarship even if they are admitted on the basis of GATE/NET score. Candidates must have at least two years full time work experience in a government organization or companies of repute in the relevant field. There is no age restriction for sponsored candidates but preference will be given to those candidates below 45 years of age. The employer must indicate that the candidate will not be withdrawn from the programme before its completion. Sponsorship in this context means retention of lien on the post and grant of suitable allowance/pay etc. by the parent organization. Candidates working in UGC/CSIR/Atomic Energy. Fellowship etc shall not be consider as sponsored candidate. Candidate shall not be allowed to join his organization before completion of the programme.

Important Points (to be noted by the candidates)
(a) If adequate number of students are not available in particular programme, the University may not run that programme. In such situation the demand draft received towards payment of fee shall be returned to the candidate. (b) If a M.Tech student leaves the programme at any time within 24 months, he/she shall be deemed to have withdrawn from the programme. (c) GATE/NET candidate will be given preference over non GATE/NET Candidates. (d) The application forms are of three different colours that can be used for applying upto three programmes with 1st/2nd/3rd preference only. While short – listing candidates for interview/test, 1st preference will be given higher weightage over 2nd preference and so on. (e) Scholarship will not be paid to candidates having GATE/NET score less than the stipulated limit.
(f) Candidate with equivalent qualifications recognized by Govt. of India such as AMIE, IETE etc. can also apply. (g) Main list candidates who fails to take admission by the given date may loose their claim and seat may be offered to wait listed candidates. (h) Fee once paid will not be refundable. (i) If any M.Tech/M.Phil programme does not run due to shortage of requisite number of candidates, the candidates who have taken admission in that programme may be allowed to change his/her admission to other M.Tech/M.Phil programme (even if the candidates has not/ applied for that programme), where vacant seat is available in the respective categories and the qualification of the candidate matches with the eligibility condition of that programme. (j) Student are required to maintain 75% attendance in the semester classes to make him/her elilgible for the end semester examination.
