Design (MDes programme): Design
Categories of MTech/MDes Students
The Institute admits MTech students under the following categories:
I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full-time for their MTech/MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech/MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis. The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
III) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.
IV) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.
Note: The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to MTech/MDes Programmes.
Categories of PhD Students
The Institute admits PhD students under the following categories:
I) REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full time for their PhD degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognized funding agencies like UGC, CSIR etc.
II) SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organisation, Academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing PhD in the Institute on a full-time basis. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organisation with at least one year’s professional experience in the respective field. He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute. Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.
III) SELF-FINANCED
A student in this category works full-time or part time for the PhD degree. He/She must have at least one year’s professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student.
IV) PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, and is admitted to the PhD programme to work on a full-time or part-time basis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his PhD Programme, his category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (Form II) must be attached with the application.
V) PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his service. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organisation with at least one year’s professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form III) must be enclosed at the time of application.
VI) EXTERNAL
This category refers to a candidate employed in an R&D organisation/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. The research work leading to the PhD degree may be carried out largely in the parent organisation of the candidate under a Local Supervisor from the organization, but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (Institute Supervisor) of the Department/Centre of IIT Guwahati, in which he is registered. He/She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organisation with at least one year’s professional experience in the respective field. The Institute does not provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. A certificate from the Head of the sponsoring Institution/Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form IV) must be enclosed at the time of application.

Eligibility for Regular PhD Candidates

For PhD: Science
a) Master’s degree in Science with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks and a valid GATE score/NET certificate. OR
b) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
c) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0. OR
d) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from any institute (other than IITs) with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE/CEED score.
For PhD: Engineering
General qualifications:
a) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in an appropriate area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
b) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Medical Sciences in an appropriate area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score/CEED score/qualified in All India Entrance Test conducted by ICMR/AIIMS for postgraduate admission or its equivalent. OR
c) Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate branch from any Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with a minimum CPI of 7.0.
Specific requirements, in addition to the above, for some Departments/Centers:
i) For PhD in Civil Engineering, a candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission. The candidate should have a minimum of CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels, and also a valid GATE score/NET certificate.
ii) For PhD in Biotechnology, (a) MTech in Biotechnology/ Biochemical Eng./Chemical Eng.. or related disciplines, or MPharm with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks OR (b) MVSc with specialization in Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry/Microbiology related disciplines with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks OR (c) BTech in Biotechnology/Biochemical Eng./Chemical Eng. or related disciplines, or BPharm, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and with a valid GATE score OR (d) MSc in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry/Microbiology/Life Sciences/Agricultural Sciences/Chemistry/related disciplines, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid qualification of GATE/NET/equivalent test conducted by ICAR/ICMR.
iii) For PhD in Environment, (a) MTech/ME in Environmental Eng./Chemical Eng./Civil Eng./Biotechnology/Atmospheric Sciences/Applied Mathematics with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks, OR (b) BTech/BE in Environmental Eng./Chemical Eng./Civil Eng./Biotechnology/Atmospheric Sciences/Applied Mathematics with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score OR (c) MSc in Atmospheric Sciences (with Mathematics, Statistics, and Applied Mathematics), Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score/NET certificate/equivalent test conducted by ICAR/ICMR, OR (d) M Des/ MArch with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or BDes/BArch from any IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0 OR (e) for the area of Environmental Economics, MA/MSc in Economics with specialization in Econometrics/Environmental Economics with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade, along with a valid NET certificate.
iv) For PhD in Nanotechnology, (a)MTech/ME in Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Instrumentation, Aerospace Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering and allied areas, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks OR (b) BTech/BE in Computer Science, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, Materials Science, Metallurgy, Instrumentation, Aerospace Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering and allied areas, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks with a valid GATE score OR (c) M Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Medical Sciences and Instrumentation with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score/NET certificate.
v) For PhD in Energy, (a) MTech/ME in Mechanical /Chemical/Civil /Agricultural /Electrical Eng. or in relevant fields, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks OR (b) BTech/BE in Mechanical /Chemical/Civil /Agricultural /Electrical Eng. or in relevant fields, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks with a valid GATE score OR (c) MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Science or in relevant fields, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score/NET certificate.
For PhD: Design
a) MDes or equivalent Master’s degree in a Design related area such as Architecture, Engineering (Product Design Engineering/Industrial Design Engineering), Ergonomics, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
b) Master’s degree in a Design related area such as Physiology/Psychology/Applied Arts/Fine Arts (Digital/Computer graphics) with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks and a valid GATE score/CEED score/NET certificate or a certificate of an equivalent test conducted by ICMR. OR
c) BDes/BArch/BTech (Comp. Sc.& Eng./Mechanical Eng.) from any of the IITs with a minimum CPI of 7.0 OR
d) Bachelor’s degree in Design, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology in a Design related area, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks with valid GATE/CEED score. OR
e) NID Post-Graduate Diploma Program in Design (PGDPD) with a basic first class engineering/BFA degree. OR
f) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year’s professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid CEED score.
For PhD: Humanities & Social Sciences
a) Master’s Degree in Arts/Commerce/Science with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grade and a valid GATE score/NET certificate. OR
b) Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks. OR
c) Bachelor’s degree from any of the IITs with a minimum CPI of 7.0. OR
d) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Design from any institute (other than IITs) with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks and a valid GATE score/CEED score.
Eligibility for Regular MTech Candidates

A valid GATE score in an appropriate discipline and a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks in the qualifying degree (GATE is not required for candidates having BTech/BDes degree from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) fulfilling the following specific requirements :
Computer Science & Engineering: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or MSc (Computer Science/Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and GATE score in CS or IT
Electronics & Communication Engineering : Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering or Equivalent or MSc(Electronics) and GATE score in EC/EE
Mechanical Engineering : Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area with and GATE score in ME
Civil Engineering : Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and GATE score in Civil Engineering
Chemical Engineering : Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and GATE score in Chemical Engineering
Biotechnology : Master’s degree in Science or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later.
Eligibility for Regular MDes Candidates

a) 4-year Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field. OR 4-year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)
b) A minimum of 55% marks (50% marks in case of SC/ST candidates) or equivalent grades in the qualifying degree/diploma.
Note: All candidates (except those having BTech/BDes degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of All India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).
Eligibility for Sponsored Full-Time and Part-Time (PhD, MTech, MDes) and Self Financed (PhD) candidates
Candidates possessing any of the qualifications specified for regular candidates, but not having GATE/CEED/NET scores/certificates etc., may apply for admission as (a) sponsored, (b) part-time, (c) self-financed (only in case of PhD) or (d) external (only in case of PhD) candidates. For PhD programmes, such a candidate must have at least 1(One) year’s professional experience in the relevant field as a regular employee of the organization/institute where he/she is currently employed. For MTech programmes, such a candidate must have at least 2(Two) years’ professional experience in the relevant field as a regular employee of the organization/institute where he/she is currently employed. A staff under IIT Guwahati’s on-going research project, will have to only submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the concerned Project In-charge along with the application form.
Relaxation for SC/ST Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST applicants.
Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, and PH categories: As per Govt. of India rules.
Financial Support (For regular students, who are Indian nationals)
PhD Programme:
Assistantships are provided to regular students (Indian nationals) at the following rates:
a) Rs.8,000/- per month (likely to be revised to Rs.12,000/- per month) for students with BE/ BTech/ MBBS/MA/MSc(2-year)/BFA(4-year)/ PGDip in Design (2-year) with 3 years at degree level/GD Art(5-year) or equivalent as entry level qualification.
b) Rs.9,500/- per month (likely to be revised to Rs.14,000/- per month) for students with ME/MTech/MDes/MVSc/ MArch/MSc(3-year)/PGDip in Design(2-year) with 4 years at degree level, or Postgraduate degree in Medical Sciences/Pharmacy with 4 years at degree level, or Postgraduate degree in Fine Arts with 4 years at degree level, as entry level qualification.
Terms & Conditions:
Selected regular category candidates will get Institute Assistantship subject to the conditions prescribed by the regulations, which includes:
1. A student with BE/BTech degree in Engineering must have a valid GATE score at the time of admission (with the exception of candidates with BTech degrees from IITs with CPI 8.0 and above).
2. A student with Bachelor’s degree in Medical Sciences must have a valid pass certificate of All India Entrance Test conducted by ICMR/AIIMS for postgraduate admission or its equivalent,
3. A student with BDes/BArch/BTech degree for admission in Design must have a valid CEED/GATE score at the time of admission (with the exception of candidates with BDes/BArch/BTech degrees from IITs with CPI 8.00 and above)
4. A student with BFA/ PGDip in Design(2-year) with 3 years at degree level/GD Art(5-year) for admission in Design must have a valid CEED score at the time of admission
5. Students with postgraduate degree in Science/Humanities must have a valid GATE score or NET qualification (JRF or LS) for the award of Institute fellowship.
6. Students with fellowships tenable at the time of admission from CSIR/ UGC/NBHM or any other organization recognized by the Institute will also receive fellowship as per the rates approved by these awarding organizations.
7. Students receiving assistantship from the Institute will be required to perform academic duties assigned to them by the departments as per rules in force from time to time.
8. The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship will be subject to satisfactory performance of the duties assigned by the department and satisfactory progress in the Programme of Research.
9. Fellowships/Assistantships may also be available from other sources. All students admitted to the Institute (other than sponsored, self-financed, part-time and external categories) will be eligible for these. 10.No financial assistance from the Institute will be available to sponsored, self-financed and part-time students. Project staff will get funding from project as per rules but will not get any additional assistance from the Institute.
MTech and MDes Programmes
Assistantships are provided to regular students (Indian nationals) at the rate of Rs.5,000/- per month.
Terms & Conditions:
1. Selected regular category candidates will get Institute Assistantship subject to the conditions prescribed by the regulations, which includes:
i. A student must have a valid GATE/CEED score at the time of admission (with the exception of candidates with BDes/BArch/BTech degree from an IIT with CPI 8.0 or above).
ii.Students receiving assistantship from the Institute or from any other funding agencies will be required to perform academic duties assigned to them by the departments as per rules in force from time to time.
iii.The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship will be subject to satisfactory performance of the duties assigned by the department and satisfactory progress in the postgraduate programme.
iv.Financial assistance will be for a maximum period of two years.
2. Scholarships/Assistantships may also be available from other sources. All students admitted to the Institute (other than sponsored and part-time categories) will be eligible for these. For details, please see Other Scholarships/ Assistantships for MTech Students.
For appearing in the PhD interview under regular category of candidates, to-and-fro sleeper class railway fare or equivalent will be paid by the shortest route from the communication address to the Institute.

Application forms and Information Brochures can also be obtained from the Deputy Registrar (Academic), Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Guwahati - 781 039, Assam, personally or by ordinary Post. To receive application forms by post, send a request along with a self-addressed unstamped envelope (24cm x 15cm size). Request for form must be sent in an envelope super-scribed with ‘Request for PhD/MTech/MDes Application form’. For example, a candidate interested in applying for MTech programme, should super-scribe on his/her envelope as ‘Request for MTech Application form’.
Filled in application forms complete with copies of mark sheets/certificates and other testimonials and a DD for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST candidates) drawn in any nationalized bank and payable at Guwahati in favour of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati should be sent to the Head of the concerned Department/Centre, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati – 781039, to reach on or before 30 APRIL 2008. The words “Application for MTech/MDes/PhD admission” should be written on the top of the envelope for sending the completed form. For example, a candidate interested in applying for PhD programme in the Centre for Nanotechnology, should (a) send the filled-in application form to The Head, Centre for Nanotechnology, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, Guwahati – 781 039, Assam, and (b) on the top of the envelope also write the words “Application for PhD admission”
Selection
The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test or/and interview/portfolio review, based on performance in GATE/NET/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

Admission to Foreign Students
The applications of sponsored or self-financed foreign national candidates will also be considered for admission to the MTech/MDes and PhD Programmes. For prescribed academic criteria, please see the eligibility criteria for MTech/MDes and PhD programmes. The desirous foreign nationals will submit their complete bio-data with regard to their academic qualifications indicating clearly (1) the class obtained, (2) percentage of marks where marks are awarded and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) or equivalent where grades are awarded, and (3) proficiency in English. Such candidates who are in India and are seeking admission to the MTech/MDes programme must satisfy the same GATE/CEED requirements (if eligible to take it) as the candidates in the general category. However, application of a candidate who is in India and has not been able to take GATE/CEED for valid reasons may be considered by the department/centre concerned on its merit.

Foreign students from countries under South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) have to pay US Dollars (USD) 2,000/- or equivalent amount as fees every year. For students from non-SAARC countries, the fee is USD 4,000/- or equivalent amount per year. This excludes the hostel admission and mess bills.
Accommodation:
Foreign students can stay in the hostels along with Indian students. The hostel rooms are single-seated. Limited number of quarter-type accommodation for married students is also available. Mess bills in hostels are around Indian Rupees (INR) 1,400/- per month for basic menu. Only Indian food is served in the hostels.
