KALASALINGAM UNIVERSITY

Short-Term Training Course on Advanced Techniques in MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY AND MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY from KALASALINGAM UNIVERSITY

Short-Term Training Course on Advanced Techniques in
MOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY AND MICROBIAL TECHNOLOGY
April 28 - May 14, 2008

Sponsored by : Department of Biotechnology, Government of India

Venue :
Department of Biotechnology
Kalasalingam University- Krishnankoil - 626190
Tamilnadu

About The Training Course
As microbial biotechnology is widely taught at the undergraduate level in India, the faculty who teach this course at the college level have to be exposed to hands-on experience in advanced techniques such as rDNA and bioprocess technology. This training course is intended to impart hands-on training to undergraduate educators in the field of microbial technology. Participants will have an opportunity to learn advanced molecular biology, fermentation and downstream processing techniques. This course will provide instructions in scientific concepts through a blend of both theoretical and hands-on training activities. More than 70% of the time will be devoted to practical sessions.

Course Content
Introduction to basic recombinant DNA techniques such as isolation of plasmid and genomic DNA
Restriction digestion and cloning strategies
Transformation and screening of recombinants
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and its applications
Recombinant protein expression and analysis using SDS–PAGE
Western blot analysis and Activity gel electrophoresis (Zymogram)
Fermentation
Downstream processing
Biosafety and IPR issues in biotechnology research

Who Should Apply?
Faculty members holding permanent positions in colleges and involved in teaching under-graduate courses in the life sciences are encouraged to apply for this course. The filled-in application form , forwarded by the college, should reach the Course Director by April 10, 2008.

Mode of Selection
Candidates will be selected based on their technical background and the usefulness of the course to their future research/ teaching career. Preference will be given to candidates who can apply the benefits of this training in their teaching/ research.

Accommodation
Accommodation will be provided at the University Guest House within the campus.
