ADMISSION TEST: GAT - 2008




GAT-2008 – GITAM UNIVERSITY ADMISSION TEST – 2008 is conducted through a Computerbased Online Test for making admissions into B.Tech., BEM, BCA and integrated five year M.Sc.Degree Programmes of GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam for the academic year2008-09.



GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam has been established in 2007 under Section 3 of the UGCAct 1956 vide notification No.F.9-37/2006-U.3 (A) dated 13 August, 2007 of Govt. of India.


GAT-2008 is conducted through computer based online test from 15th April to 14th May 2008
throughout the country for admission into the following programmes for 2008-09 :

Programmes offered:
B.Tech. – 4 Years

1. Biotechnology 2. Civil Engineering 3. Computer Science & Engineering 4. Electrical & Electronics Engineering 5. Electronics & Communication (Manufacturing and Engineering Management)6. Electronics & Instrumentation Engg. 7. Information Technology 8. Mechanical Engineering 9. Mechanical Engineering

BCA (Bachelor of Computer Applications) – 3 Years
BEM (Bachelor of Environmental Management) – 3 Years
M.Sc. (5 Years Integrated) in the following disciplines: 1. Applied Mathematics 2.Biochemistry 3. Biotechnology 4. Chemistry 5. Physics 6. Microbiology


Eligibility: For admission into all the above programmes, the candidates should have passed 10+2/12th examinationfrom a recognized Central / State Board or its equivalent either in 2008 or 2007 subject to securingthe following percentage of marks in specified subjects.
i) B.Tech. Programmes (other than Biotechnology) : A minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
ii) B.Tech. in Biotechnology: A minimum of 60% marks in aggregate in Mathematics or Biology, Physics and Chemistry.
iii) BCA : A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry.
iv) BEM and 5 year integrated M.Sc. Programmes: A minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in Mathematics or Biology, Physics and Chemistry.

GITAM UNIVERSITY MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS WILL BE GIVEN TO TOP 100 RANKERS OF GAT-2008

Students who are appearing for 10+2/12th examination in 2008 or who have passed 10+2/12th Examinationin 2007 only are eligible to appear in the GAT-2008. Students who have passed 10+2/12th examinationin 2006 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in GAT-2008.


Details of GAT-2008:

Computer Based Online test means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate submits the answers through the use of keyboardor mouse. Each computer is connected to a server, which prepares the questions set and delivers itto the candidate on the computer. This is unlike the traditional paper-pencil based test, which is generallyoffered on a single day to all candidates. GAT-2008 will be offered over a period of time and the candidatecan choose the center, the day and time of his/her convenience to take the test, as described in thelater sections.


GAT–2008 Test Format:
GAT–2008 will be of total 2 hour duration (without break). The test consists of three parts:
Part I : Mathematics / Biology Part II : Physics Part III : Chemistry


Candidates who appear in Biology or Mathematics in Part I of GAT–2008 will be eligible for admission to B.Tech. in Biotechnology, BEM and five year integrated M.Sc. Programmes in Chemistry,Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Microbiology. Candidates who appear in Mathematics in partI of GAT-2008 will be eligible for admission into all courses.

Test Centers for GAT–2008 : Bangalore, Mumbai, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, Chennai, Rajahmundry, Delhi, Tirupathi, Guntur, Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Kolkata, Warangal.


How to apply: for GAT-2008 :
Interested candidates should register their names for GAT–2008 by applying in the prescribed application form which can be obtained in one of the following modes :
Download the application form online at http:/www.gitam.edu and take the print out. The filled in application form along with prescribed fees of Rs.1000/- (Rupees One thousand only)

in case of male candidates and Rs.600/- (Rupees Six hundred only) in case of female candidates by way of Demand Draft payable at Visakhapatnam from any scheduled bank shouldbe sent to Director–Admissions, GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam-530 045.

OR Obtain the application form from any one of the selected branches of Union Bank of India throughoutIndia
or
(ii) Obtain the application form by post from the Director, Admissions GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam by sending a request on plain paper giving the candidate’s name and mailing address, accompanied by a crossed demand draft for Rs.1,100/- (Rupees One thousand one hundred only) in case of male candidates and Rs. 700/- (Rupees Seven hundred only) in case of female candidates. The application form will be sent by Speed Post / Registered Post.


Requests by post will be accepted only till 5th March, 2008. Demand Drafts should be drawn

in favour of GITAM UNIVERSITY, payable at Visakhapatnam on any scheduled bank.


Special provision for Female candidates:

The GAT-2008 application fee for female candidates is Rs.600/- (Res.700/- by post) only instead ofRs.1,000/- Rs.1100/- Further, the University will try its best to accommodate all female candidates at their first preference of test centers.


Procedure for applying for Admission:

In addition to applying for and appearing in GAT-2008, candidates have to also apply for admission to GITAM UNIVERSITY giving details of their 10+2/12th marks and preferences to different degreeprogrammes offered along with D.D. for Rs.200/- drawn in favour of GITAM UNIVERSITY payable at Visakhapatnam. The prescribed application form(s) for admission will be available at the GITAM UNIVERSITY website (www.gitam.edu) by 30th April 2008. The application form can also be obtained by post from Director-Admissions by sending a D.D. for Rs.250/-.


Merit List for Admission:

As explained earlier, a candidate who has appeared in GAT-2008 will be eligible for admission only if he/she gets the required minimum marks in the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology subject of 10+2/12th examination as per the eligibility criteria. All the candidates who have appeared in GAT-2008 and are interested in admission will be required to submit an application with 10+2/12th marksand preferences to different degree programmes offered, on or before 30th June 2008.

Admissions will be purely on merit and by following the rule of reservation applicable to GITAM

UNIVERSITY. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtainedby the candidate in the GAT-2008. The merit position of such eligible candidates (i.e. those who have appeared in GAT-2008 and havesubmitted the application for admission in the prescribed form(s) with 10+2/12th marks, preferences and the required fees) will be prepared on the basis of their scores in GAT-2008. When the score of two candidates are the same, first their scores obtained in Mathematics (if he/she has taken Mathematics in GAT-2008) or Biology (if he/she has taken Biology in GAT-2008) will be considered for separating them. If the scores obtained in Mathematics / Biology are equal, then their scores in Physics in GAT-2008 will be considered for separating them. If still there is a tie, their MPC (if he/she has taken Mathematics in GAT-2008) or Bi.PC (if he /she has taken Biology in GAT-2008) total marks in 10+2/12th examination will be considered for their separation.


Direct Admission to Board Toppers:

First rank candidates of all the central and state boards in India for the year 2008 will be given

direct admission to the program of their choice, irrespective of their GAT-2008 score as per the eligibility criteria mentioned above.
