Scope of Geoinformatics
Global climate change and shrinking resources have enlightened our awareness of how much we depend on the dynamic and complex systems of the Earth’s environment. Managing existing resources and unearthing new ones while maintaining a sustainable environment requires an enhanced level of cooperation and an optimized use of ever increasing geo data that are growing faster than we can read and index them. Geoinformatics is a science which develops and uses information science infrastructure to address the problems of geosciences and related branches of engineering. Geoinformatics combines geospatial analysis and modeling, development of geospatial database, information systems design, human computer interaction and both wired and wireless networking technologies.

Geoinformatics technologies include geographic information systems, spatial decision support systems, global positioning systems(GPS) and remote sensing. Geoinformatics uses geocomputation for analyzing geoinformation.

Many fields benefit from geoinformatics, including the development of in-car navigation systems, automatic vehicle location systems, transportation planning and engineering, environmental modeling and analysis, urban planning, telecommunications, agriculture and public health. In India, more than 500 companies are providing employment in the field of Geoinformatics.

Objectives of the Programme
The Diploma in Geoinformatics -DGI (Distance Mode) programme offered by the Arjun Singh Centre for Distance and Open Learning, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi has been designed to upgrade the theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of Remote Sensing and GIS/GPS applications. Today the application of such technologies offer tremendous job opportunities in India and abroad.
