Gulbarga University M.Phil, Ph.D Admissions 2010


Gulbarga University invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to M.Phil and Ph.D Degree programme in the following Post-Graduate Departments of the Gulbarga University, Gulbarga for the academic year 2009-10. The admissions to M.Phil and Ph.D Degree Programme is subject to availability of the seats and Guides at Post-Graduate Departments of Studies and research in Gulbarga University, Gulbarga.

Separate applications should be submitted for M.Phil and Ph.D Degree Programme.

ELIGIBILITY:-

A) FOR M.PHIL DEGREE PROGRAMME.
A candidate who has passed the Master's Degree Examination of Gulbarga University, or any other University in the concerned or cognate subject considered as equivalent thereto securing not less than 55% of the aggregate marks at Master's Degree Examinations as a whole shall be eligible for admission. However, in case of
a) Teachers with 5 years of teaching experience on full time and regular basis and
b) Candidates belonging to SC/ST and Category-I, the minimum percentage of marks for securing admission shall be 50% of the aggregate marks at the Master's Degree Examinations as a whole.

A candidate who is eligible as indicated above shall be selected on the basis of an Entrance Test administered by the University. The minimum marks to be scored to qualify through the entrance test shall be 40% for SC/ST candidates and 45% in case of others. The merit list of such candidates shall be prepared by taking into consideration 50% of marks of Entrance Test and 50% of marks secured at the Masters Degree course.

It shall be followed by an interview to be organized by the concerned Department/ Institution. At the time of interview, the candidates are expected to discuss their research interest/area and only those candidates who have been recommended by Department/ Institution on the basis of such interview will be considered for admission.

The allocation of the supervisor for a selected student shall be decided by the Department in a formal manner depending on the number of students per faculty member, the available specialization among the faculty supervisors, and the research interest of the student as indicated during interview by the student. The allotment/allocation of supervisor shall not be left to the individual student or teacher.

A Department of Studies may also have a part time M.Phil course for the benefit of candidates who are employed on full time and regular basis and fulfill the aforestated eligibility criteria.

B. FOR PH.D DEGREE PROGRAMME.

a) A candidate who has obtained a Master's Degree from this university or from any other University recognized as equivalent thereto securing not less than 55% of the aggregate marks at Master's Degree course as a whole shall be eligible to register for the Ph.D Degree Programme. However, in the case of SC/ST, the Category -I, candidates, the minimum marks required shall be 50%.

b) Such of the teachers employed in degree colleges who are in service on a regular basis for a minimum of ten years and desirous of registering for the Ph.D Programme shall be permitted for registration if they have a minimum of 50% of marks at the Master's Degree Course.

A candidate who is eligible as indicated in (a) and (b) above shall be selected on the basis of an Entrance Test administered by the University. The minimum marks to be scored to qualify through the entrance test shall be 40% for SC/ST candidates and 45% in case of others. The merit list of such candidates shall be prepared by taking in to consideration 50% of marks of Entrance Test and 50% of marks secured at the Master's Degree course. However, candidates who have passed NET/SLET/GATE/JRF/ M.Phil are exempted from Entrance Test, and their merit will be decided based only on the percentage of marks secured at the PG examinations. Further, candidates selected to work under specialized funded projects those coming under FIP/QIP Programmes and students sponsored by the Government are also exempted from the Entrance Test. They shall be directly admitted to the Ph.D Programme if they have minimum qualifications prescribed above, irrespective of merit.

The candidates so selected provisionally shall face an interview to be organized by the Department/institution as the case may be.

At the time of interview, doctoral candidates are expected to make a presentation on their research interest/area and only those candidates who have been recommended by School/ Department/institution on the basis of such interview will be considered for admission by the Doctoral Committee.

The subject of research shall be the one which relates to the main branch of knowledge chosen for Master's Degree or in a cognate subject. However, a candidate willing to register for Ph.D in a subject other than the one chosen for the Master's Degree is also eligible for registration, provided the research design of such candidates is approved by the Doctoral Committee of the subject in which the candidate is willing to register for Ph.D.

A Department of Studies may also have a part time Ph.D course for the benefit of candidates who are employed on full time and regular basis and fulfill the aforestated eligibility criteria. Candidates above the age of 55 years with a good second class P.G Degree in any discipline can register for Ph.D course in, any discipline with approval of their research proposal by the concerned Doctoral Committee.

After having been admitted, each Ph.D student shall be required to undertake course work for a minimum period of one semester. The part time candidates shall complete the course work in two phases of three months each during vacation or on leave. The course work shall be treated as pre Ph.D preparation and must include a course on research methodology which may include quantitative methods/statistical analysis, technical writing literature search skills, reviewing published work ICTs and computer applications in research management. It may also involve reviewing of published research in the relevant field. Course work shall be organized on faculty basis to ensure uniform academic standards. A student is deemed to have completed the course work successfully provided he/she secures a minimum of 50% marks in a term end examination conducted by the department having one paper of 100 marks incorporating the components mentioned above.

If found necessary, course work may be carried out by doctoral candidates in sister departments/institutes, either within or outside the university upon satisfactory completion of course which shall form part and parcel of Ph.D Programme, the Ph.D scholar shall undertake research work and submit a thesis within the stipulated time prescribed in the relevant sections of Ph.D regulations.

DURATION OF COURSE:

A. For M.Phil Degree Programme :- The full time course shall extend over a period of 12 months divided into two terms. The Part-Time course shall extend over a period of twenty four months.

B. For Ph.D Degree Programme:- A full time candidate who has completed a minimum period of three years from the date of registration and not less than six months before the expiry of the period prescribed, shall submit ten copies of the synopsis of the thesis through the Guide and the Departmental Council to the Doctoral Committee for permission to submit the thesis. In case of part time candidate the minimum period shall
be four years from the date of registration. A candidate registered for Ph.D on full time basis shall submit the thesis within 05 years from Registration and those registered on part time basis shall submit thesis within 06 years. A M.Phil course, full time and part time shall be completed within a maximum period of three and four years respectively.

APPLICATION FORM:-
Application form may be obtained at the State Bank of
Hyderabad, University Branch, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga during the working hours on payment of Rs 800/- (Rs Eight hundred only Rs 400/-towards application form + Rs 400/-towards Entrance Examination) for SC/ST and Category-I candidate 50% of the above with production of Caste Certificate.. Out station applicants may get the application by sending a DD in favour of Finance Officer, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga for required amount alongwith self addressed envelope affixing postal stamp worth of Rs
50.00. The SC/ST candidates can have such applications on payment of Rs 400/- (Rupees four hundred only) or on sending a DD with xerox copy of their caste certificate along with self addressed envelop affixing stamp worth of Rs 50/-.

The application form can also be downloaded from the University Website: www.gulbargauniversity.kar.nic.in The filled in application along with DD towards the coit of application form, drawn in favour of FINANCE OFFICER, Gulbarga University, Gulbarga (towards the cost of application) should be submitted to the concerned Chairperson as indicated above. The details of DD should be entered in the application form.

ADMISSION:- Admission list will be notified on the Notice Board of the concerned Department of Studies after completion of procedure.


LAST DATE:- The last date for issue and receipt of application forms is 26.06.2010. The duly filled in application forms for M.Phil and Ph.D Degree Programme along with necessary documents are required to be submitted to the Chairpersons of Post- Graduate Department concerned on or before the last date. The candidate who are employed should submit their applications through their employers.
