POST-GRADUATE CERTIFICATE COURSEIN NUTRITION
Effective implementation of health and nutrition programmes call for adequately trained healthprofessionals. The Post-Graduate Certificate Course in nutrition is one of the short-term intensivetraining programmes in nutrition offered by the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, India, forpersons involved in medical education and public health.

Goals: 1. To provide the participants an exposure to the latest developments in nutrition science withparticular reference to nutritional disorders and strategies for their prevention and controlincluding allied aspects which are relevant to developing countries. 2. To enable them to develop the necessary leadership in planning, implementation and evaluationof nutrition programmes, which benefit the community. 3. To provide necessary background to help strengthen the nutrition component in teaching inmedical colleges and enhance the capabilities of personnel involved in nutrition and healthintervention and training programmes.
Eligibility:
1. Graduates (MBBS) or Post-Graduate in Medicine (MD) involved in implementation of public healthprogrammes or engaged in teaching medical colleges.2. Post-Graduates in Science (MSc) (Physiology/Biochemistry/ Foods & Nutrition/Dietetics) engagedin teaching in relevant disciplines of medical/home science colleges.In addition to in-service candidates, sponsored by government or non-governmentalorganisations, foreign nationals sponsored by their employees or international organizations willalso be considered.DurationThe course extends over a period of 10 weeks, beginning on 1st January every year and endingin the second week of the following March.Language of InstructionThe course will be conducted in English.Financial SupportIn-service sponsored participants from government or non-governmental organisations areprovided per diem by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Participants from South EastAsia, the Pacific and the Middle East will seek support from International agencies like WHO.
Fees: The Institute does not charge any fees for the course from Indian in-service participantssponsored by various government or non-governmental agencies. However, tuition fee is payable by overseas participants, as per the prevailing rules. The current rate is US $ 200-00 per head per monthfor overseas participants.
Examination and Award of Certificate: Participants are judged on the basis of : (i) performance at seminars (ii) execution of individualprojects assigned to them (iii) group educational activities including task analysis and (iv) results offormative and summative evaluations in the form of quizzes, exercises and examination. On theirsuccessful completion of the course, participants receive a formal certificate from the Institute.Boarding and
Lodging: Accommodation is available for the participants at the International Hostel on NIN campus onreasonable payment.ApplicationsProcedureApplications from Indian participants are to be submitted in the prescribed form. Application formsof sponsored candidates should be routed through their administrative channels. While advanceapplications may be sent to NIN, official copies of the applications are to be received in the Institute’soffice before the closing date.
Participants from abroad have to be sponsored by WHO or any other International Agenciesproviding financial assistance for the duration of the course through fellowship support. It is essentialthat the participants from outside India obtain the formal clearance and permission of the Ministry ofHealth and Family Welfare, Government of India, for undergoing the course at NIN.
Foreign participants are expected to submit their applications for admission at least five months inadvance to obtain clearance from Government of India.

IIT Madras offers Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination 2008.

Details:

* Examination date is Sunday, May 18, 2008 between10 AM - 1 PM

* Sale of application commences on January 28, 2008

* Sale of application ends on March 3, 2008

* Five year integrated master's programme, leading to MA degree in three disciplines - Development Studies, Economics and English Studies.

* One objective type question paper of three hour duration in English and Comprehension Skill, Analytical and Quantitative Ability and General Knowledge covering the areas of Indian Economy (since Independence), Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs (Post-World War II), and Environment and Ecology. Syllabus for examination is given in the admission brochure.

* Test paper is in English

Eligibility:

* Minimum 60% marks in aggregate [55% for SC/ST and persons with disabilities (PD)] in (10+2) or equivalent examination.

* In case the respective Boards award letter grades, without providing a norm for converting them to equivalent percentage marks, the norms decided by the HSEE Committee shall be final.

* General candidates date of birth cannot be earlier than October 01,1983.

Students who are appearing for 10+2/12th examination in 2008 or who have passed 10+2/12th Examinationin 2007 only are eligible to appear in the GAT-2008. Students who have passed 10+2/12th examinationin 2006 or earlier are NOT eligible to appear in GAT-2008.


Details of GAT-2008:

Computer Based Online test means the candidate sits in front of a computer and the questions are presented on the computer monitor and the candidate submits the answers through the use of keyboardor mouse. Each computer is connected to a server, which prepares the questions set and delivers itto the candidate on the computer. This is unlike the traditional paper-pencil based test, which is generallyoffered on a single day to all candidates. GAT-2008 will be offered over a period of time and the candidatecan choose the center, the day and time of his/her convenience to take the test, as described in thelater sections.


GAT–2008 Test Format:
GAT–2008 will be of total 2 hour duration (without break). The test consists of three parts:
Part I : Mathematics / Biology Part II : Physics Part III : Chemistry


Candidates who appear in Biology or Mathematics in Part I of GAT–2008 will be eligible for admission to B.Tech. in Biotechnology, BEM and five year integrated M.Sc. Programmes in Chemistry,Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Microbiology. Candidates who appear in Mathematics in partI of GAT-2008 will be eligible for admission into all courses.

in case of male candidates and Rs.600/- (Rupees Six hundred only) in case of female candidates by way of Demand Draft payable at Visakhapatnam from any scheduled bank shouldbe sent to Director–Admissions, GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam-530 045.

OR Obtain the application form from any one of the selected branches of Union Bank of India throughoutIndia
or
(ii) Obtain the application form by post from the Director, Admissions GITAM UNIVERSITY, Visakhapatnam by sending a request on plain paper giving the candidate’s name and mailing address, accompanied by a crossed demand draft for Rs.1,100/- (Rupees One thousand one hundred only) in case of male candidates and Rs. 700/- (Rupees Seven hundred only) in case of female candidates. The application form will be sent by Speed Post / Registered Post.


Requests by post will be accepted only till 5th March, 2008. Demand Drafts should be drawn

in favour of GITAM UNIVERSITY, payable at Visakhapatnam on any scheduled bank.


Special provision for Female candidates:

The GAT-2008 application fee for female candidates is Rs.600/- (Res.700/- by post) only instead ofRs.1,000/- Rs.1100/- Further, the University will try its best to accommodate all female candidates at their first preference of test centers.


Procedure for applying for Admission:

In addition to applying for and appearing in GAT-2008, candidates have to also apply for admission to GITAM UNIVERSITY giving details of their 10+2/12th marks and preferences to different degreeprogrammes offered along with D.D. for Rs.200/- drawn in favour of GITAM UNIVERSITY payable at Visakhapatnam. The prescribed application form(s) for admission will be available at the GITAM UNIVERSITY website (www.gitam.edu) by 30th April 2008. The application form can also be obtained by post from Director-Admissions by sending a D.D. for Rs.250/-.


Merit List for Admission:

As explained earlier, a candidate who has appeared in GAT-2008 will be eligible for admission only if he/she gets the required minimum marks in the Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology subject of 10+2/12th examination as per the eligibility criteria. All the candidates who have appeared in GAT-2008 and are interested in admission will be required to submit an application with 10+2/12th marksand preferences to different degree programmes offered, on or before 30th June 2008.

Admissions will be purely on merit and by following the rule of reservation applicable to GITAM

UNIVERSITY. The merit position of the candidate for admission will be based on the score obtainedby the candidate in the GAT-2008. The merit position of such eligible candidates (i.e. those who have appeared in GAT-2008 and havesubmitted the application for admission in the prescribed form(s) with 10+2/12th marks, preferences and the required fees) will be prepared on the basis of their scores in GAT-2008. When the score of two candidates are the same, first their scores obtained in Mathematics (if he/she has taken Mathematics in GAT-2008) or Biology (if he/she has taken Biology in GAT-2008) will be considered for separating them. If the scores obtained in Mathematics / Biology are equal, then their scores in Physics in GAT-2008 will be considered for separating them. If still there is a tie, their MPC (if he/she has taken Mathematics in GAT-2008) or Bi.PC (if he /she has taken Biology in GAT-2008) total marks in 10+2/12th examination will be considered for their separation.

NCERT Doctoral Fellowships 2008
The National Council of Educational Research and Training, New Delhi has invited applications for the award of 10 NCERT Doctoral Fellowships in education and fields
directly related to education. The fellowships will be given to candidates for pursuing doctoral work in a recognized university of their choice. The fellowships will be given in five priority areas: Education of the Disadvantaged, Classroom Processes and Practices, Curricular areas, Education for Peace, and Psycho-social Development of children. Candidates with 55% marks at
the Masters' degree level and below 35% of age can apply. The fellowship amount will be Rs 8000/- pm (likely to be revised to Rs 10,000/-) with an annual contingency grant
of Rs 10,000/-. Applications in prescribed format (which can be downloaded from NCERT website (www.ncert.nic. in) may be submitted by 31 January 2008 to Head, DERPP, NCERT, New Delhi-110016. A research proposal in about 1500 words containing objectives of the research, theoretical framework, proposed methodology, and implications for education should be sent with the application. New ideas and use of innovative methodology will be given preference.

NCERT Doctoral Fellowships 2008
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is an autonomous organization set up by the Government of India to advise and assist the Ministry ofHuman Resource Development at the center, and Education Departments of States/Union Territories in formulation and implementation of their policies and major programmes in the field of education, particularly for qualitative improvement of school education. The major constituent units of the NCERT are: (1) National Institute of Education (NIE), New Delhi, (2) Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET), New Delhi, (3) Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education (PSSCIVE), Bhopal, (4) Regional Institute of Education (RIE), Ajmer, (5) Regional Institute of Education, Bhopal, (6) Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar, (7) Regional Institute of Education, Mysore, and (8) North-East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong. Among several activities, the NCERT and its constituent units undertake, aid, promote and coordinate research in areas related to school education.
The NCERT has brought out National Curriculum Framework 2005 (NCF-2005), which has enabled a fresh discourse and new ideas on education in India. With a focus on the child, NCF-2005 stresses the need for a perspective on how children learn and environments to enable this process within larger concerns of equality and justice in ademocratic society. The document further emphasizes the understanding of curricular and pedagogic practices, and social and cultural factors that influence and mediate these processes in diverse contexts. There is a need to develop a body of knowledge that enhances our understanding of the concerns expressed in NCF-2005. Towards this end, the NCERT intends to offer fellowships, named as NCERT Doctoral Fellowships, for conducting research at the doctoral level.Applications are invited for the award of 10 NCERT Doctoral Fellowships in the field of education and other disciplines directly related to education. The fellowships are intended for young aspirants to pursue doctoral work in a recognized university/ research institution of their choice. Young scholars from different disciplinary perspectives will be encouraged to enter and research the field of education.
Objectives of the Scheme: (a) To provide opportunities to young scholars to research the field of education from different disciplinary perspectives. (b) To build the knowledge base of education in the contemporary context.
Scope of the Scheme: The NCERT Doctoral Fellowships are intended to enable young scholars to pursue doctoral research in education and other related disciplines. Doctoral Fellows canpursue their work in a recognized university/ research institution of their choice. The NCERT encourages original thinking in conceptualization of the problem and use ofinnovative methodology in conduct of the research related to school education.
Priority Areas: Fellowships will be given in the following priority areas emerging from the concerns expressed in NCF-2005. 1. Education of the Disadvantaged: Disadvantages of different kinds because of belonging to scheduled and backward castes, scheduled tribes, and minority communities, and due to gender, disability, and living in difficult circumstances. 2. Classroom Processes and Practices: Multi-grade teaching, over-crowded schoolrooms, medium of instruction, languages used in the class, teachinglearning process, teacher concerns, evaluation practices, disciplinary techniques, and space and time management. 3. Curricular Areas: Teaching of science, mathematics, languages, social sciences, arts and crafts, work and vocational education, environmental sciences, and health and physical education. 4. Education for Peace: Conflict and its resolution in different spheres, problem of violence, respect for cultural diversity, values for living in harmony with people and nature, child rights, and sustainable development. 5. Psycho-social Development of Children: Development of self, relationships and social skills, understanding and cognitive skills, communication skills, leadership, decision making, and coping with stress.
Details of these areas and concerns are presented in the National Curriculum Framework 2005 document and reports of 21 Focus Groups. These documents are available on NCERT web site (www.ncert.nic.in).
Eligibility: 1. Good Academic record with at least 55% marks at the Master’s degree level. 2. Candidates should not be more than 35 years of age as on the last date of receipt of applications. 3. Candidates registered for Ph.D. degree in a recognized university/ or working toward their Ph.D. registration are eligible to apply.
Selection Procedure: The procedure for short listing of applicants will be designed by NCERT. Short listed candidates will be required to appear for an interview, which may also includepresentation of the proposals. Candidates will be paid second (sleeper) class train fare by the shortest route for attending the interview-cum-seminar.Reservation of SeatsThe statutory provisions for reservation of seats will be available to the candidates belonging to different categories.
Fellowship Amount: NCERT Doctoral Fellows will receive a fellowship of Rs. 8000/- per month (likely to be revised) (equivalent to UGC Junior Research Fellows) for a maximum period of threeyears during the period of registration. They will also receive a contingency grant of Rs. 10,000/- per annum during this period. The fellowship will commence from the date ofjoining by the candidate after completing the registration formalities for Ph.D. and terminate at the end of three years from the date of joining or with the submission of thedoctoral thesis which ever is earlier.
Disbursement of Fellowship: The NCERT will credit the monthly fellowship to the savings bank account of the Fellow. For this, each Fellow will be required to maintain an account with the State Bankof India. The Fellow will be required to submit a ‘Certificate o Attendance and Satisfactory Work Performance’ to NCERT on a quarterly basis. Release of the monthly fellowship from second quarter onwards will be subject to receipt of the said certificate. Annual contingency grant to the extent of actual expenditure incurred but not more Rs.10,000/- per annum will be credited to the account of the Fellow after receipt and scrutiny of the bills/vouchers submitted by the fellow duly signed and countersigned by the supervisor and Head of the Department.
Research Advisor: NCERT will appoint a Research Advisor for each Doctoral Fellow from a Panel of Experts (both from within and outside the Council) prepared by it. The Research Advisorwill work along with the thesis supervisor appointed by the University/ Research Institution where the Fellow is registered. The details of this arrangement will be workedout in consultation with the concerned universities.
Monitoring of Work: Doctoral Fellows will be required to submit six monthly progress reports duly forwarded by their supervisors/ Head of the Department and Research Advisors to NCERT. ACommittee of Experts will review the progress. Also a research colloquium will be held annually where Fellows will present the progress of their research. If the progress of the research is found unsatisfactory, NCERT reserves the right to terminate the fellowship at any point of time.
Leave Rules: Leave rules as prescribed in case of UGC Junior Research Fellowship will be applicable. Further, NCERT Doctoral Fellows will not accept any other remunerative assignment during the period of fellowship.
Publication of the Thesis: After the award of Ph.D. degree, the Doctoral Fellows will be required to submit a copy of the thesis (along with a CD) to NCERT. NCERT will consider publication of thecompleted research in an appropriate form. The Fellow can apply for permission to publish his/her work elsewhere.Application ProcedureApplication should be made in the prescribed format, which along with the information brochure, can be downloaded from the NCERT website or can be obtained by post.
Completed application forms should be accompanied by a concept paper of about 1500 words on the theme of the proposed research, which should contain statements about (a) rationale and objectives of the study, (b) conceptual framework, (c) proposed methodology, and (d) potential contribution of the study. Attested copies of all marksheets/certificates and proof of Ph.D. registration (if already registered) should also be sent with the application at the following address.
