INTRODUCTION
Engineering is the activity of using scientific understanding and technical knowledge to create useful devices and processes. Management is the activity of delivering them to people at an affordable price. Thus, for survival of any industry, a blend of engineering and management principles play a key role. In the field of aquaculture and fisheries, a wide variety of activities such as site selection, design and construction of farms, facilities, equipment; design and construction of fishing vessels, fishing gear, cage systems for mariculture; formulation and manufacture of feed; processing and value addition of fish; environmental protection etc. require inputs of engineering and management.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this course is to introduce the fundamental tools and techniques of engineering and management that can be applied to enhance the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture.

Planning and Design of Aquacultural Farms.
Engineering Principles of Pond Water Quality Management.
Principles of Fishing Vessel and Fishing Gear Design.
Design of Aquacultural Facilities and Equipment.
Science and Engineering Interface in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Engineering Principles in Processing and Preservation of Aqua-products.
Operations Research in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Modeling Techniques in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Application of Biotechnology in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Application of Statistics and Computers in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Economics and Financial Management in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
GIS and Remote Sensing in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Research Methodologies in Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Fisheries and Aquacultural Engg Lab.
Field Visits.
Special Lectures.

ELIGIBILITY
Scientists in fisheries and aquaculture institutes, teachers in colleges and universities involved in education and research in the field of fisheries and aquaculture, officials in fisheries departments and directorates, banks, government and private organizations are eligible to apply. Entrepreneurs in the field of fisheries and aquaculture with a BSc degree are also eligible. However, a few students in the level of MSc, PhD and postdoctoral will be accepted provided they have physics and mathematics in their Higher Secondary or Intermediate level.

COURSE FEE
A course fee of Rs. 4500/- is to be paid by 15th March along with pre-registration-application by Demand Draft drawn in favour of 'CEP-STC, IIT Kharagpur', payable at Kharagpur.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD
Accommodation will be arranged in Visveswaraya Guest House inside IIT campus. The charges towards accommodation and food will be Rs 3,500/- to be paid in cash by the participants after arrival to IIT Kharagpur.

HOW TO APPLY?
Pre-registration-application may be sent on a plain paper enclosing a personal data sheet including name, date of birth, indicating male/female, official designation & address, contact address, telephone number & mobile number, educational qualification and work experience, bank draft details (name of bank, draft number, amount, date etc). Students applying should mention name of college, course of study, roll number and application should be through institution. The completed application should be sent by speed post to the course co-ordinator by 15th March 2008. The pre-intimation regarding interest of participation and other communication may be made to the course co-ordinator through Email or telephone.
